What is unusual about Mahmoud Abbas, or Abu Mazen, as he was known when his fellow Palestinians had yet to take his measure, is that most of what he does for his Israeli and US masters he does in plain sight.
To which of the two he is most beholden will be determined during his upcoming visit to Washington for the latest chapter in what has euphemistically been referred to as the “peace process” since it was launched in the aftermath of the Oslo Agreement. The odds are it will be Israel. In Oslo, it should be recalled, Abbas, as the chief Palestinian negotiator, played Neville Chamberlain for Tel Aviv, agreeing to surrender occupied Palestinian land with a view toward putting a permanent end to Palestinian resistance and, immediately, to the first Intifada...."

To make matters worse for Petraeus, over the past six months, the Taliban have continued to establish a politically dominant presence in more areas of northern Afghanistan which had previously been judged relatively secure. The Washington Post's Joshua Partlow reported on August 15 - the same day Petraeus was making his claim of progress - that Taliban fighters were "spreading like a brush fire into remote and defenseless villages across northern Afghanistan".
Two weeks earlier, Alissa J Rubin of the New York Times had quoted the chairman of the provincial council in Baghlan province as saying the situation there was "very serious and day by day it is getting worse and worse". ...."

NBF: What are your major concerns about the Palestinian political atmosphere right now?
DB: The major concern is that we all know that this is going to fail. It doesn't require anyone with any particular knowledge or foresight to realize that these talks are going to fail. The real question is what is going to come afterwards, and here is where I'm most concerned. For the past 17 years, the PLO, and in particular, Fatah, has had one strategy and only one strategy: negotiations, negotiations, negotiations.
And they have had only one strategy as regards to themselves, and that is survival. We are now at a stage where we are seeing that this is going to be -- and I really hope that it is -- the final blow to the logic and the ideology of negotiations, that people somehow have to negotiate their freedom.
The real question is, what is this leadership going to do? Is this leadership going to continue to hold us hostage to this tired, visionless lack of strategy? Or is something different going to come?
I'm not concerned with the talks, we know they are going to fail. My bigger concern is about what is going to happen once the talks fail, and is there going to be anybody who is going to come forward with a different plan, a different strategy, a different vision? And that is my fear. You can't teach an old dog new tricks."

"The following is an edited excerpt from a 7 August 2010 letter written by Ameer Makhoul from Israeli prison. A human rights defender, the director of the Arab nongovernmental organization network Ittijah, a leading voice of the Palestinian boycott, divestment and sanctions movement and a Palestinian citizen of Israel, Makhoul was arrested during a raid of his family home in Haifa in the early morning hours of 6 May. For the following eleven days Makhoul was held in isolation, denied access to a lawyer, and subjected to torture. Rights groups have condemned his political persecution and the criminal proceedings launched against him.
"My trial is still somehow stuck. The system is structurally and politically Shabak-oriented, not justice-oriented. My human dignity, basic human rights and constitutional rights are suffering from basic violations. I still have no permit to meet my lawyers without being recorded....
I am doing a lot of efforts to bring hope and steadfastness to freedom prisoners. It is one of my missions inside prison. I have to keep in contact with Ittijah and the community and all solidarity movements, groups and persons, but most of all I have to correspond intensively as much as possible with my daughters Hind and Huda, who have become mature fighters for freedom, justice and dignity and mostly bringing back the happiness of life which was highjacked on 6 May at 2:30am. My wife Janan is leading in a heroic way the whole campaign as well as facing huge tasks at home.
Your letters are needed; the taste of solidarity is different in prison than being outside. The taste reflects the great solidarity, support and empowering acts."

Military Court Sentences Civilian Workers

"CAIRO, Aug 31, 2010 (IPS) - An Egyptian military court handed down sentences Monday in the trial of eight civilian factory workers who led a protest against deteriorating safety conditions in an army-owned factory. Rights groups say the trial should never have taken place....
Rights groups fear the government may be using the threat of military trials to intimidate workers and eliminate the growing labour movement.
"Thousands of protests, strikes and sit-ins have been staged by Egyptian workers in both the public and private sectors, protesting the rising cost of living and demanding better wages and working conditions. This latest referral before military courts of workers is therefore a disturbing step," Amnesty International said in a statement.
In June, the International Labour Organisation (ILO) ranked Egypt among the worst 25 states that violate workers' rights. It said labour conditions were deteriorating, and accused the government of violating union freedoms and of deploying security forces to break up industrial actions....."

"جميل ان يعتذر رئيس الوزراء الفلسطيني سلام فياض عن قيام مجموعة من افراد الامن، التابعين لسلطته، بالاعتداء على مجموعة من ممثلي فصائل منظمة التحرير الفلسطينية، وشخصيات وطنية مستقلة، ومنعهم من المشاركة في ندوة تداعوا لعقدها للتعبير عن معارضتهم لمشاركة رئيس السلطة محمود عباس في المفاوضات المباشرة التي ستستأنف غداً في واشنطن، ولكن هذا الاعتذار غير مقبول، بل يجب ألا يقبل، لان هذه السلطة لا تحترم الشعب الفلسطيني فقط، بل تستهتر بأقرب حلفائها فيما تبقى من منظمة التحرير، وتمارس ابشع انواع البلطجة، لقمع الرأي الآخر، ومنعه من التعبير عن وجهة نظره اذا كانت تتعارض مع وجهة نظرها وقادتها.
المشكلة لا تنحصر في مجموعة من بلطجية رجال الامن، اقتحمت مقر الندوة ومزقت اللافتات والشعارات، واثارت حالة من الفوضى في القاعة، وانما في النهج الذي اتبعته السلطة في الاعوام الاخيرة، من حيث مصادرة الحريات، واحتكار التمثيل الفلسطيني، والحديث باسم الشعب، دون ان تملك الشرعية او التفويض او الاثنين معاً.
مجموعة رجال الامن هذه التي مارس اعضاؤها اعمال البلطجة هذه، تنتمي الى جهاز أمني جرى اختيار المنتسبين اليه بعناية فائقة، وتحت اشراف اربعة اجهزة استخبارات. اثنان منها عربيان (الاردن وفلسطين) واثنان اجنبيان (الشين بيت الاسرائيلي والسي اي ايه الامريكي) وهذا موثق في محاضرة ألقاها العراب الاكبر الجنرال كيث دايتون في معهد بواشنطن، وحتى يكون هذا الجهاز ابرز ادوات المخطط الحالي في خلق الانسان الفلسطيني الجديد الخالي من الوطنية والكرامة وعزة النفس.
هذه المجموعة، وفي هذا الاطار، تربت على قيم ومبادئ واخلاقيات لا نعرفها، بل لا نريد ان نعرفها، وليس لها اي علاقة بقيم واخلاقيات ومبادئ الشعب الفلسطيني التي استشهد من اجلها آلاف الشهداء الفلسطينيين والعرب والمسلمين.
من اقدموا على اعمال البلطجة هذه لم يقدموا عليها من جراء انفسهم، وانما بتعليمات من قيادتهم بشقيها الامني والســـياسي. وليــــس صـــدفة ان العشـــرات من هؤلاء البلطجية كانوا يحملون صور الرئيـــس عباس، ويهتـــفون بحمايته بالروح والدم وكأنه حرر فلسطين من البحر الى النهر. ترى ماذا سيهتفون له اذا فعل ذلك؟

ومن المفارقة ان هؤلاء الذين تعرضوا للاعتداء جرى استدعاؤهم قبل ايام معدودة فقط للمشاركة في اجتماع للجنة التنفيذية نفسها، واصدار بيان، بطلب من الرئيس يرفض الذهاب الى المفاوضات المباشرة الا اذا تحقق تقدم في المفاوضات غير المباشرة على صعيد القضايا المحورية مثل وقف الاستيطان، والقبول بحدود الدولة الفلسطينية على اساس حدود عام 1967، وتحديد مرجعية واضحة للمفاوضات اي قرارات الشرعية الدولية، وعندما تراجع الرئيس عن هذه المواقف مكرها وبضغط امريكي وتنكر عربي وذهب الى واشنطن بناء على دعوة امريكية، وفق شروط نتنياهو، بات ممنوعاً على هؤلاء ان يوضحوا وجهة نظرهم، ويبرئوا ذمتهم امام شعبهم والتاريخ، من هذه المصيدة التي اعدت باحكام في واشنطن لتصفية القضية الفلسطينية او ما تبقى منها، وبمباركة عربية.
بنيامين نتنياهو رئيس وزراء اسرائيل تعمد ان يهين الرئيس عباس، والوفد المرافق له، عندما اعلن صراحة وامام الملأ، انه لن يمدد قرار تجميد الاستيطان الذي ينتهي في الثلث الاخير من الشهر المقبل، وكأنه يقول اتحداكم ان تنفذوا تهديدكم بالانسحاب من المفاوضات اذا لم يتم التمديد مثلما ترددون في تصريحاتكم التلفزيونية، لاعطاء انفسكم ورقة توت تبرر ذهابكم الى واشنطن بعد التراجع عن كل 'لاءاتكم'السابقة.
الدكتور سلام فياض اعلن بالامس الشق الثاني من خطته لاستكمال بناء البنى التحتية للدولة التي
يعتزم اعلانها في شهر آب/اغسطس المقبل، واذا كانت هذه الدولة العتيدة عنوانها القمع، وتكميم الافواه، ومصادرة الرأي الآخر، فانها لا تتماشى مع طموحات الشعب الفلسطيني، ولا ترتقي الى الحد الادنى من تضحياته.

تخص الدكتور فياض بالذات لانه المسؤول الاول عن بناء قوات الامن الفلسطينية باشراف الجنرال الامريكي دايتون، وهو المرشـــح الاكبر لتولي مسؤولية القيادة فيها مستقبلاً، فدور الرئيس عباس وانصاره في حركة 'فتح' هو مجرد دور 'المحلل'.
الدكتور سلام فياض القادم الى السلطة من البنك الدولي، يسير على خطى اصدقائه الامريكيين، اي انهم يريدون الديمقراطية، وسيادة القانون لشعوبهم فقط، ولكن عندما يتعلق الأمر بالمواطن الفلسطيني، فان الديمقراطية ومستلزماتها ترمى من النافذة، وتدخل الديكتاتورية وادواتها القمعية من الباب العريض. فالقيم الديمقراطية وما يتفرع عنها من حريات محرمة على الشعب الفلسطيني وكل شعوب المنطقة في الوقت نفسه.
وربما يجادل البعض بانه جرى تشكيل لجنة تحقيق بأمر من الرئيس عباس، وهذا صحيح، ولكن متى ادت مثل هذه اللجان عملها بمهنية وموضوعية، واذا كانت فعلت ذلك، هل جرى العمل بتوصياتها، من حيث معاقبة المسؤولين، وخاصة من كبار رجال السلطة، والقائمة طويلة لا يتسع المجال لذكرها.
في أحد الأيام مر حكيم الصين العظيم كونفوشيوس بامرأة تبكي بحرقة، وتلطم خديها، فسألها عن اسباب بكائها، فقالت له ان النمر اكل زوجها اليوم، وقبل شهر اكل ابنها البكر، وقبل شهرين التهم والدها.
فسألها كونفوشيوس: لماذا لا تغادرين هذه البلدة اذن؟.. اجابت.. وكيف تريدني ان اغادرها وفيها حاكم عادل؟
الدكتور فياض اطلق في مؤتمره الصحافي وثيقة سماها 'موعد مع الحرية'، قال انها تتضمن ارساء قيم النزاهة والشفافية والفصل بين السلطات، وتوفير الامن والامان وترسيخ سيادة القانون والحرية والعدالة والمساواة. انها اذن جمهورية افلاطون الفاضلة.
ردنا على الدكتور فياض بالتذكير بالمثل الفلسطيني الذي يقول 'الليلة السعيدة بتبان من العصر' ومثل مقدمات كهذه لا يمكن ان تؤدي الى العدالة وسيادة القانون اللتين يبشر بهما.

يعتزم اعلانها في شهر آب/اغسطس المقبل، واذا كانت هذه الدولة العتيدة عنوانها القمع، وتكميم الافواه، ومصادرة الرأي الآخر، فانها لا تتماشى مع طموحات الشعب الفلسطيني، ولا ترتقي الى الحد الادنى من تضحياته.

تخص الدكتور فياض بالذات لانه المسؤول الاول عن بناء قوات الامن الفلسطينية باشراف الجنرال الامريكي دايتون، وهو المرشـــح الاكبر لتولي مسؤولية القيادة فيها مستقبلاً، فدور الرئيس عباس وانصاره في حركة 'فتح' هو مجرد دور 'المحلل'.
الدكتور سلام فياض القادم الى السلطة من البنك الدولي، يسير على خطى اصدقائه الامريكيين، اي انهم يريدون الديمقراطية، وسيادة القانون لشعوبهم فقط، ولكن عندما يتعلق الأمر بالمواطن الفلسطيني، فان الديمقراطية ومستلزماتها ترمى من النافذة، وتدخل الديكتاتورية وادواتها القمعية من الباب العريض. فالقيم الديمقراطية وما يتفرع عنها من حريات محرمة على الشعب الفلسطيني وكل شعوب المنطقة في الوقت نفسه.
وربما يجادل البعض بانه جرى تشكيل لجنة تحقيق بأمر من الرئيس عباس، وهذا صحيح، ولكن متى ادت مثل هذه اللجان عملها بمهنية وموضوعية، واذا كانت فعلت ذلك، هل جرى العمل بتوصياتها، من حيث معاقبة المسؤولين، وخاصة من كبار رجال السلطة، والقائمة طويلة لا يتسع المجال لذكرها.
في أحد الأيام مر حكيم الصين العظيم كونفوشيوس بامرأة تبكي بحرقة، وتلطم خديها، فسألها عن اسباب بكائها، فقالت له ان النمر اكل زوجها اليوم، وقبل شهر اكل ابنها البكر، وقبل شهرين التهم والدها.
فسألها كونفوشيوس: لماذا لا تغادرين هذه البلدة اذن؟.. اجابت.. وكيف تريدني ان اغادرها وفيها حاكم عادل؟
الدكتور فياض اطلق في مؤتمره الصحافي وثيقة سماها 'موعد مع الحرية'، قال انها تتضمن ارساء قيم النزاهة والشفافية والفصل بين السلطات، وتوفير الامن والامان وترسيخ سيادة القانون والحرية والعدالة والمساواة. انها اذن جمهورية افلاطون الفاضلة.
ردنا على الدكتور فياض بالتذكير بالمثل الفلسطيني الذي يقول 'الليلة السعيدة بتبان من العصر' ومثل مقدمات كهذه لا يمكن ان تؤدي الى العدالة وسيادة القانون اللتين يبشر بهما.

Not guilty. The Israeli captain who emptied his rifle into a Palestinain schoolgirl
An Israeli army officer who fired the entire magazine of his automatic rifle into a 13-year-old Palestinian girl and then said he would have done the same even if she had been three years old was acquitted on all charges by a military court yesterday.
The soldier, who has only been identified as "Captain R", was charged with relatively minor offences for the killing of Iman al-Hams who was shot 17 times as she ventured near an Israeli army post near Rafah refugee camp in Gaza a year ago.
The manner of Iman's killing, and the revelation of a tape recording in which the captain is warned that she was just a child who was "scared to death", made the shooting one of the most controversial since the Palestinian intifada erupted five years ago even though hundreds of other children have also died.
After the verdict, Iman's father, Samir al-Hams, said the army never intended to hold the soldier accountable.
Capt R's lawyers argued that the "confirmation of the kill" after a suspect is shot was a standard Israeli military practice to eliminate terrorist threats.
Following the verdict, Capt R burst into tears, turned to the public benches and said: "I told you I was innocent." [This is the nature of this most uncivilized society of the past 60 years. Killing little arab girls is not a crime, it is justified and glorified by this sick psychotic society. Israel is a demented nation , led by racist psychopaths , inhabited by one of the most inhumane colonizers, who refuse to acknowledge the simplest truths , keep believing the lies that formed their "nation" and "national identity".]
Direct talks déjà vu

President Obama is hosting a dinner for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on Sept. 1, in order to kick off the new round of direct talks between Israeli and Palestinian negotiators. As regular readers know, I don't think this effort will go anywhere, because the two sides are too far apart and because the Obama administration won't have the political will to push them towards the necessary compromises.
Furthermore, there are now a few hints that the Obama administration is about to repeat the same mistakes that doomed the Clinton administration's own Middle East peacemaking efforts and the Bush administration's even more half-hearted attempts (i.e., the "Road Map" and the stillborn Annapolis summit). Last week, the Israeli newspaper Yediot Ahronoth provided a summary of a conference call between Obama Middle East advisors Dennis Ross, Dan Shapiro, and David Hale and the leaders of a number of influential American Jewish organizations. According to the article (whose accuracy I cannot vouch for), the goal of the direct talks will be a "framework agreement" between the two sides that would then be implemented over a period of up to ten years.

"We have reached a decisive transition in the evolution of US military doctrine. The "Global War on Terrorism" (GWOT) directed against Al Qaeda launched in the wake of 9/11 is evolving towards a full-fledged "war of religion", a "holy crusade" directed against the Muslim World.....
The fact that the 9/11 attacks were not instigated by Muslims has rarely been acknowledged by the Muslim community. Al Qaeda's ongoing relationship to the CIA, its role as a US sponsored "intelligence asset" going back to to the Soviet-Afghan war is not mentioned. Since the early 1980s, Washington has covertly supported the most conservative and fundamentalist factions of Islam, largely with a view to weakening secular, nationalist and progressive movements in the Middle East and Central Asia.
