Giving Assad some credit

Agree with him or not, accuse him of destroying Syria; condemn him for the death of hundreds of thousands, but Bashar al-Assad has been consistent throughout.
Yes, he's a dictator. And yes, you might say he's responsible for the break up of his country for the sole purpose of preserving his regime, but Assad has shown to be a tenacious ruler.
You might say he instigated the violence and is undoubtedly the architect of the civil war that's torn his nation, but Assad has been upfront about his intentions through and through.

Since the beginning of the Syrian uprising this March four years ago, Assad made it clear that he will defend his rule regardless of the consequences.
'Apres moi le deluge'
He was straightforward; if he had to go, so does the country. The collapse of this regime would mean the collapse of the state regardless of the costs for Syria and Syrians.
And when faced with the possibility of an international intervention to halt the violence, Assad warned of an "earthquake" and "tens of Afghanistans".
The man didn't sugarcoat or mince his words. He wasn't coy or implicit. He explicitly threatened to fight with all means at hand until the end.
Aside from the use of chemical weapons, the Assad regime improved on the barrel bombs strategy that has proved no less deadly and perhaps more destructive than chemical weapons. Packed with TNT, oil and pieces of steel, the barrels are dropped from the air on Syrian towns like Aleppo with terrible cost to people and property.
Assad has been adamant from the beginning that he would do what it takes to meet his desired ends. And he waged a terrible campaign of death and destruction under the pretext of fighting the terrorists.
And with half of the country under siege and the other half displaced, Assad is unflinching.
A democratic dictator
What started four years ago as peaceful protests demanding limited justice and reform soon turned into a national upheaval demanding political change. But instead of easing the repression and reconciling with the opposition, the Assad regime struck back with iron fist. In reaction, the protest movement armed in defense and the conflict grew ever more violent and chaotic.
Is he in total denial? Or is he just as obstinate a leader as his father was during three decades of dictatorship, reckoning that if one maintains one's position, the world will eventually come around?

But for Assad, the Syrian uprising, dare I say the Syrian revolution, was a "farce" - a "fake spring", a conspiracy against Syria for which the Arab and the Europeans will "pay a heavy price".
After all, Syria was nothing like Tunisia or Egypt. Syria was governed by a nationalist popular regime that Assad led personally. To prove his point, Assad changed the constitution and insisted on running for elections.
And once again Assad proved unswerving.
Just as the deaths count skyrocketed to an incredible 200,000 Syrians, the proud tyrant headed to the ballot box. He presumably won 88.7 percent of the vote when only a few could or would want to vote.
The inauguration ceremony was a total success just as the entire nation was falling apart, with millions displaced, hurting and dying. It featured happy crowds celebrating and cheering the triumphant leader - the saviour of his people. I N C R E D I B L E.
But hey, how bad could things get? Alas, "Syria is entering the dark ages, literally and metaphorically". As one group of scientists have concluded, 83 percent of the lights in Syria "have gone out" since the start of the conflict.
And 2014 proved to be the worst year yet for Syrian civilians according to aid agencies. The nation's wealth, infrastructure, institutions and much of its workforce have been "obliterated".
The death toll climbs, the casualties mount, the outrage grows louder, but Assad remains defiant with an ever-growing penchant for violence.
Clean and clinical
Four years, four million refugees and hundreds of thousands of casualties have changed Syria forever, but not Assad. He's the same. He remains fit, well-dressed and well-shaved.
As BBC's Jeremy Bowen reported last month: "I was expecting the president to exhibit some sign of strain. But he had not noticeably changed since the last interview I had done with him, in 2010."
He added: "Western leaders often age noticeably in office … But President Assad, who is 49, did not seem to have been worn away much, physically, by the past few years."
Could it be clear consciousness? Assad categorically denies the use of barrel bombs that's been well documented. He also denies blocking humanitarian aid to the Syria people despite claims to the contrary by some 21 aid organisations. In short, Assad denies any responsibility for the ongoing Syrian catastrophe.
Is he in total denial? Or is he just as obstinate a leader as his father was during three decades of dictatorship, reckoning that if one maintains one's position, the world will eventually come around?
Alas, some are indeed making the absurd claim that since Assad is part of the problem, he's part of the solution. That is sure to send a message across the globe that if you kill enough people, you might just save your dominion.
Perhaps, Assad is projecting certainty and steadiness just like other wartime leaders do in difficult times. But I suspect, from looking closely into his rhetoric and comportment, Assad harbours absolutely no doubt about the rightness of his path.
That's the type of dangerous perhaps fascist mindset shared by ISIL leaders that's not only destroyed a country, but also paved the way for the undoing of the entire region.

New Sisi leak reveals more on Dahlan’s role in Libya

Libya's Panorama channel aired another leaked audio recording purports to reveal more about the role dismissed Fatah member Mohammed Dahlan played in the unrest in Libya.
In the recording, aired yesterday, Egyptian President Abdel Fatah Al-Sisi's office manager Abbas Kamel is heard revealing that Dahlan, accompanied by three people, will secretly visit Libya on a private jet.
In the recording, Kamel is heard recommending a military official allow Dahlan to leave the Libyan airport in secret, noting that Dahlan has already caused a problem for the Egyptian authorities because he travels upon orders from the UAE which monitors all his movements.
Kamel also warned that Ahmed Gaddaf Al-Dam, the cousin of the late Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi who lives in Egypt, may be harmed adding that Egyptian authorities are cooperating with Gaddaf Al-Dam for his protection.
The first part of the recoding reveals an alleged phone call between Kamel and military council member Mahmoud Hijazi, in which Kamel provides Hijazi with Dahlan's flight information to Cairo with a Libyan person named as Mohammad Ismail Ahmad Ismail who worked as a security advisor to Saif Al-Islam Gaddafi, son of the late Libyan leader.
Ismail fled to the UAE after the Libyan revolution and works with Mahmoud Jibril and Dahlan in the UAE to monitor the situation in Libya.
In the recording Kamel is heard mentioning Dahlan mockingly and referring to him as "that person!"
Kamel is also heard giving a man named Husam Dahlan's flight number and the names of those travelling: Mohammed Ismail Ahmed Ismail, Mohammed Khalid Idris Dahlan, Saleem Sheikh Musa Mahmoud Al- Sheikh and Mohammad Yusuf Shakir Dahlan.
Kamel noted in the recording that a security vehicle will escort Dahlan and his companions and arrange their meeting with Hijazi the next day.
In the third part of the recording, Kamel is heard talking to Al-Sisi about a report which recommends monitoring the situation in South Africa and Ahmed Gaddaf Al- Dam.
Kamel is heard saying that Gaddaf al- Dam is in some sort of cooperation with someone and "we need to locate his place of residence".
The recording also reveals Hijazi saying: "They are not against us, they are against the situation in general and these are the people who want to change Libya." Al-Sisi replied: "Change what?" and Hijazi answered: "they want to remove the Muslim Brotherhood, so we will hear what he has to say and tell him nothing."
Following this Kamel added: "But we did not meet this Haftar," to be interrupted by Sisi who tells Kamel to meet with "Gaddaf Al-Dam because he is important politically".
Kamel tries to point out that Gaddaf Al-Dam "has important details", he is interrupted by Al-Sisi who says that "he wants money". Hijazi adds: "Yes, which would open other portals for us."

I am a Muslim and I am not afraid to say I visited Israel

I met Esther in my first
Semester at San Diego State and we became BFFs instantly. We started
hanging out and take classes together and our bond grew stronger and stronger.
By our sophomore year we started planning our graduation trip, Europe? China? ,
South America? Esther suggested “Israel?” and I was taken back by her
suggestion. “But it is not safe Esther I replied and they will not welcome me
as a Muslim”. I grew up having a very negative perception of Israel,
I know they are at war with Muslims and I know from my friends who used to frequent
the mosque that Israelis are not fond of Muslims . They don’t like us and we
don’t like them. I came to know that Esther had gone to Israel in High school
in the summer after graduation organized by “Taglit Birthright Israel” and had
the time of her life. She told me Israel is not as evil or bad as it is
portrayed in media and that It is a beautiful country that I should visit and
see for myself what it is all about. #BeOpenMinded

Project on campus was planning a free trip to the Holy Land so I packed my bags
and headed over there with a diverse group of students: Jews, Muslims, Latinos,
Gays and even a few African Americans. #SpringBreak
I consider myself a
moderate Muslim: I pray, I fast Ramadan, I observe Eid and eat Halal meat. I
don’t wear Hijab but my mom does. I plan to marry a Muslim and go to Mecca for
Hajj. I don’t speak or understand Arabic but I can read it and read the Quran
in high school. I am a “Sushi” my Father is Sunni and my mother is Shia. I
voted for Obama and I listen to NPR. I am a regular American girl who just
happens to be Muslim; I watch reality TV, love Football, go to school and enjoy
Mexican food. #MuslimAndProud
When we
arrived to Tel Aviv the moment we stepped out of Ben Gurion airport
I sensed that Israel is a lot like California: the weather, the diversity, the
traffic, even the air smelled and felt familiar kind of like in the same
way how you see Mexicans in Southern California. It was here that we were
told that Israel is full of 7 million different Israeli opinions of what to do
with their portion of the land. What surprised me most about Tel Aviv was how diverse and tolerant it was, I
saw Russians, French, American, Canadian, Iranian and African Jews
all living side by side , all speak English very well, all educated
, stylish and cultured. When I closed my eyes at night I felt
like I was in La Jolla but with a zestier ambience. #HolyHolyLand
The following morning we
went to Haifa or what we were told “The Muslim Quarter” of Tel Aviv, here we
saw where the Muslim population of Israel lives. Little known fact
Israel is home to some 1 million Muslims, who live side by side peacefully with
their Jewish neighbors. It was here in the Muslim Quarters that I had the best
Hummus I have ever eaten. It was better than Sabra or anything CPK or
Cheesecake Factory ever served. The restaurant was tiny (in fact it
was so small I could not do a Facebook check in, or post a review about it on
Yelp) the staff was very friendly, it was family owned and every one seemed
very happy to see us. Thank God I took picture of my meal and uploaded it to
Instagram #HolyLandHummusIsTheBest.
After
our time in Tel Aviv, we traveled to the West Bank a place where Muslim live
above ancient Jewish ruins, the kingdom of Solomon. West Bank
also has a lot of Jewish explorers, anthropologists, and curators, these people
take posts in the middle of nowhere, and they spend their day and night digging
for relics. Along the way, we unearthed Israel's nuance and
complexity and we made sure not discuss any legal basis for the presence of
these post. One contrast between the West Bank and Israel is Internet speed and
lack of Wi-Fi, but the landscape shifted continuously and thankfully to our
selfie-stick we captured every streaking moment and posted them
on Instagram with #HolyLandFun.
The
West Bank is home to many Muslims and everyone I met was happy and friendly.
Many of the Muslims I met were Graffiti artists, and unlike in California they
were allowed to express their artistic creativity on a special wall built just
for that. I was so inspired by them. I came to learn that the wall that lay in
front of us was a wall of solidarity, built by both Palestinians and Israelis
together. Built to protect the innocent. The tour guide mentioned it was 25’
feet in elevation and over 400 miles in length, and I immediately thought: wow
that is like a trip from San Diego to Las Vegas and halfway back #IMissVegas. My friend Youssef
who was accompanying us made a joke, he is a Arab-Israeli and a
Muslim very modern and open minded he even likes to eat Sushi, Youssef
said: imagine you stack 3 Michael Jordan on top of each other, and then add
Spud Webb to the top and you still can’t see to the other side. We were 15’ people
on the tour, and Youssef made us all laugh out loud #LOL. After our visit to the
border, I decided that my next trip will be the Great Wall of China. #HolyLandWall #Inspired #ChinaNext
It was
after our time in the west bank that we made it to the Golan height. The
mountainous area is one if Israel’s best tourist attraction, from wine tasting
to snowboarding to hot natural baths Golan has it all. Our host respected
my religious restrictions and did not take me wine tasting, but the rest went.
Here again I was reminded by Temecula wine country, with the wineries and the
communities on all the hilltops and in surrounding areas. Like Southern
California in Israel you can snowboard and sunbathe in the same day. #HolyLandCoolness
Finally
we made it to Jerusalem. What a magnificent city. It is here that all 3 Abrahamic
religions have roots. Here Jesus walked, Mohamed ascended to the sky and Moses
built his temple. Jerusalem was sublime, and a shinning example of how all
three religions co-exist. Watching Jews pray at the Wailing Wall, Muslims have
their Khutba in Al-Aqsa mosque, seeing
Christians congregate in the Church of the Holy Sepulchre made
me feel closer to Allah and realize nothing is impossible. We can all put our
hate and differences aside and celebrate each other and respect our religions,
if they did it in Jerusalem we can do it everywhere. #HolyLandBliss
What I realized after coming back home to California is that we as
Muslims can learn so much from Israel: here is a nation that brought together a
wide diverse Jewish population and they were able to co-exist peacefully and
build a strong nation with a powerful Jewish identity. As I see Muslim nations torn apart by
civil wars and Muslim societies driven to extremism and terrorism, it is a gentle
reminder that we can be Like Israel, if we apply ourselves more and celebrate
our diversity and understand others better, instead of being consumed by
irrational hate and negativity. #HolyLandHope

قال عضو الهيئة الإسلامية المسيحية لنصرة المقدسات منويل مسلم إن الدول العربية تحاصر قطاع غزة، وإن زعماءها ينبغي أن يحاكموا على هذا الجرم قبل تقديم قادة إسرائيل للقضاء الدولي.
وأضاف مسلم في حوار مع الجزيرة نت أن الدول العربية باستطاعتها رفع الحصار عن غزة لكنها لم ترد ذلك لأنها لم تعد جزءا من الصراع مع إسرائيل، على حد قوله.
ودافع مسلم عن حق الفصائل الفلسطينية في مقاومة الاحتلال، ودعا حركتي التحرير الوطني الفلسطيني (فتح) والمقاومة الإسلامية (حماس) للابتعاد عن "المناكفة المخزية" وتبادل التهم والتخوين.

كيف تصفون واقع المقدسات الإسلامية والمسيحية في مدينة القدس؟
الواقع في القدس لا يمكن أن نسميه واقع أرض مقدسة. ما يجري في القدس إهانة كبرى للضمير الإنساني والمؤمنين.
ما يجري في القدس هدم للقيم. لذلك نرى سفك الدماء والإبعاد عن الأماكن المقدسة. تذهب إلى المكان المقدس وتجده فارغا. كنيسة القيامة يقف وراءها مليار نسمة وتذهب وتجدها فارغة وقد تحولت إلى مكان أثري. إسرائيل هي السبب في كل ما يجري حين حولت المكان المقدس إلى معلم أثري.
القدس الآن ليست في خطر، القدس تموت، ومقدساتها في حالة يرثى لها. تشهد المدينة عملية إحلال دين محل دين. الآن يُدمر الدين المسيحي، وتوقف الديانة الإسلامية لصالح الإسرائيليين. يُوقفون كل شيء حتى الآذان. صار المسلم لا يستطيع أن يصلي ولا المسيحي الفلسطيني، بينما يأتي الزنجي من آخر العالم. نحن شعب القدس لا نعرفها والآخرون يأتون إليها بكل حرية.

كيف تتابعون كتابة اليهود شعارات عنصرية على جدران الكنائس والمساجد فيالضفة والداخل؟
هذا هجوم إنساني على الله. لكن الله هو الغالب. القدس أو المقدسات لن تُهزم، الذي يُهزم هذا الإنسان القذر البذيء الذي يحاول المساس بها.
ما يجري حملة هدفُ إسرائيل الأساسي منها الصدام مع الإنسانية الفلسطينية ومحاولة هدمها، لكن إسرائيل خسرت أخلاقيا جميع حروبها مع الفلسطينيين رغم تفوقها سياسيا وإعلاميا وعسكريا.
إسرائيل تحاول أن تثير حربا دينية. وهنا ننبه إخوتنا العرب والمسلمين أن نتجنب هذه الحرب الدينية، لأن كل البلاد الغربية وأميركا منحازة أصلا لإسرائيل وستنتصر لها.
هناك هجرة للفلسطينيين المسلمين والمسيحيين منذ النكبة، ما انعكاساتها وما سبل تقليصها؟
لا يوجد إحصاء لعدد المهجرين، لكن توجد على الأرض حقائق. لدينا عجز كسلطة مدنية. يجب أن تكون هناك متابعة لمن يخرج، لكننا نهمله. يجب تنظيم العلاقة مع شعبنا في أوروبا خشية أن يذوب المهجرون في الحياة في الغرب. لا يوجد لدينا في الدول العربية أو فلسطين تربية وطنية للشخص حول القدس وأهميتها.
شاركت ذات مرة في محاضرة بأوروبا، وعرفت نفسي بأن عربي مسيحي شاءت الظروف أن أكون في جزء اسمه فلسطين في بلدة اسمها بيرزيت. لكن هذا لم يرق لكثيرين ممن رغبوا في الاكتفاء بفلسطينيتي وترك قوميتي العربية.
وكيف تقيمون الموقف العربي عموما من القضية الفلسطينية والصراع مع الاحتلال؟
نحن نتألم لما يجري في البلاد العربية. فالحرب على غزة عام 2014 جريمة اقترفت بحق الأبرياء، ووجدنا أن الدول العربية ليست جزءا من هذا الصراع، فبدت وسيطا للتهدئة أو تأجيل الصراع بدل أن تكون جزءا منه، وكأن الفلسطينيين ليسوا جزءا من هذا الجسد.
"حماس ليست إرهابية، بل فئة مقاومة تقاوم الشر ومن حقها على العالم أن يحميها"
ومن يحاصر قطاع غزة باعتقادكم؟
غزة تحاصرها الدول العربية. الذي يحاصرها هو القادر على فك الحصار ولا يريد، الذي يجب أن يقدم للمحاكمة الدولية قادة البلدان العربية قبل إسرائيل. نحن لنا مأخذ على الدول العربية التي طرحت مبادرة سلام وعرضت التطبيع مقابل انسحاب الاحتلال إلى حدود 1967، وهو ما رفضته إسرائيل.
كان على الدول العربية أن تقول: إذا انسحبت نطبع معها ونسالمها وإلا سنمرغ وجهها في التراب.
ما تعليقكم على تصنيف القضاء المصري حماس منظمة إرهابية، بينما رفضت محكمة أوروبية هذا التصنيف؟
لماذا تسألني عن مصر؟ العالم كله صنف حماس. نحن نعرف أن أوروبا تشفق علينا، لكن عند التوقيع توقّع لصالح إسرائيل.
يجب أن نفهم أن حماس والفلسطينيين بأكملهم مشروع مقاومة لتحرير أرضهم. نحن عندنا مشاكلنا الكثيرة. أنا أحبهم (حماس) وأحترمهم. لكن لسنا بحاجة كفلسطينيين: مسلمين ومسيحيين، أن نهب لأفكار بعيدة عن شغلنا... ليس لدينا فراغ لنفكر بالسلفيين والإخوان.
لا يجوز أن نحشر كل المقاومة بحماس. الفلسطينيون كلهم يقاومون. نؤكد أن الحركات الإسلامية والمسيحية ليست إرهابية. وحماس ليست إرهابية، بل فئة مقاومة تقاوم الشر، ومن حقها على العالم أن يحميها. الذي يقاوم هو الذي يستحق فلسطين، والذي لا يقاوم لا مجال له أن يكون بيننا ولا أن يشرب من مائنا.
هل تخشون انتقال الصراع الطائفي في الدول العربية إلى فلسطين؟
يجب أن نحتاط لكل الظروف. ونربي أبناءنا مسلمين ومسيحيين على المحبة. لذلك كتبت وثيقة عهد ووفاء وبلّغت بها السيد الرئيس محمود عباس ووافق عليها وباركها وطلب أن تتبناها الكنيسة.
سنبدأ التوقيع على هذه الوثيقة من القاعدة إلى القمة حتى يشعر الإنسان الفلسطيني بانتمائه وقوته، وأن يحمي نفسه من الموجات التي يمكن أن تكون أصولية تكفيرية.
"لا نسمح لفتح وحماس أن تتناكفا. هذه المناكفات مخزية وتحط من قيمنا الفلسطينية.
مر على الانقسام الفلسطيني قرابة ثماني سنوات، من الذي يمنع المصالحة بتقديركم؟
أولا يجب أن ننظر لماذا حدث ذلك. كل واحد منا يبحث عن خلاص فلسطين، لكن هناك اختلاف في الرأي. فلسطين لن تسامحنا أبدا إذا تراشقنا بسهام نارية كما علمنا ببعضنا بعضا.
هذا التراشق الناري جعل الفلسطينيين يسيرون في خطين متوازيين ولا مجال للتفكير في توحيدهما. يمكن أن يقتربا ويتلامسا وتجرى اتفاقات كبيرة مثل الانتخابات وتجري غيرها.
من هنا طرحت مبادرة وسلمتها للرئيس وسيدرسها، وكذلك أهلنا في غزة، أساسها أن الفلسطينيين يجب أن يتفقوا وأن يتخلصوا من الاتهام بالإرهاب. ففي فلسطين الذي يقاوم الاحتلال مجرم، وهذا فقط في فلسطين.
أنتم طرحتم مبادرة للسلام مع إسرائيل، ما فحواها؟
الفكرة أننا نطرح مبادرة سلام على العالم ونسقط عنا تهم الإرهاب وعدم وجود شريك، ونطالب روسيا وحلف شمال الأطلسي (ناتو) ودول الكبرى والولايات المتحدة بدعمها.
المبادرة تمنحنا السلام على أساس كل قرارات الشرعية الدولية المتعلقة بفلسطين، لكن إذا لم تقبل بها إسرائيل، فإن على منظمة التحرير والمجتمع وحماس والجهاد الإسلامي أن تقرر العودة للكفاح المسلح سبيلا للخلاص من الاحتلال. المبادرة قيد التداول منذ عدة أشهر وسلمت لجميع الأطراف الأسبوع الماضي.
وما موقف حماس ومنظمة التحرير من مبادرتكم؟
حدثت أكثر من شخص في حماس، فقالوا إنها تستحق البحث في جميع الدوائر. كنت أيضا أرسلتها لمؤتمر عقد في غزة مؤخرا. كما تم بحثها في الضفة مع رجال السياسة، وهناك ترحيب بها، وسنطرحها في مهرجانات ستعقد في مصر والأردن.
هل من كلمة أخيرة للفلسطينيين في ظل التوتر الداخلي؟
القوة في الاتحاد. لذلك أجدد صرخة السجناء والشهداء والأمهات الحزينات والفقراء والمساكين. ندعو إخوتنا في الأطر السياسية أن لا يوجهوا مقاومتهم لبعضهم بعضا.
نحن لا نسمح لفتح وحماس أن تتناكفا. هذه المناكفات مخزية وتحط من قيمنا الفلسطينية. شعبنا يجب أن يكون شجاعا قويا بيده سلاح يدافع به عن فلسطين.
