Israeli Airstrikes Reported Near Damascus Airport

Brief Grounding of Flights Reported, No News of Casualties

As they intermittently have done over the course of the past few years, Israeli warplanes today attacked the Syrian capital city of Damascus, striking an area near the Damascus airport. Locals reported explosions in the area, along with a brief power outage and a temporary grounding of flights out of the airport.
There was no news of any casualties, nor any confirmation of what the Israeli planes may have been targeting, though some rebel factions speculated that they were targeting a shipment of weapons to Hezbollah. This is generally the justification for Israeli strikes, though the Israeli government rarely confirms or denies such strikes.
As usual, the Israeli Defense Forces declined to comment on the attack, which would be one of the first confirmed strikes since Russia became formally involved in the Syrian War. Russia has limited Israeli overflights elsewhere in Syria, but is said to have made a deal to coordinate with Israel to prevent inadvertent conflicts elsewhere in the country.
Though Israeli strikes regularly kill some Hezbollah fighters or a few Syrian soldiers, they are generally not considered a serious threat to the survival of the Assad government, so Russia likely would not object to more such limited strikes.

The real message from EU move to label Israeli settlement goods

After years of dithering and delay, the European Union on Wednesday finally took the minimal step of requiring labels clearly marking goods that come from Israeli settlements built on occupied Palestinian and Syrian land in violation of international law.
Palestinians welcomed the move, but are decidedly underwhelmed. Nonetheless the European step holds some important messages.
Mahmoud Nawajaa, general coordinator for the Palestinian BDS National Committee, the broad coalition that backs the boycott, divestment and sanctions movement, said it was a “sign that European governments are reacting to public opinion, civil society campaigning and Israeli intransigence and are becoming more willing to take some basic action against Israeli violations of international law.”
But, Nawajaa added, “putting some labels on a small number of Israeli products is hardly a proportionate response to repeated Israeli war crimes.”

Not “Made in Israel”

Under the new regulation, labeling of goods imported into the EU “must be correct and not misleading.”
Products made in Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank, including East Jerusalem, and Syria’s Israeli-occupied Golan Heights can no longer be marked “Made in Israel.”
The EU requires that the words “Israeli settlement” be added to the labels that consumers will see in stores.
It is unclear how the regulation will be enforced: Israeli exporters routinely deceive customs officials and retail chains about the origin of their goods.
The regulation also says that “products from Palestine that do not originate from settlements” can be marked ‘product from Palestine’ or ‘product from West Bank (Palestinian product).’”
The EU considers “Palestine” to be limited, at most, to the occupied West Bank and Gaza Strip – just 22 percent of historic Palestine.
Article 1 Collective, a group that advocates for Palestinian rights under international law, had this tongue-in-cheek suggestion of what the new labels might look like:

EU hypocrisy

The EU move smacks of hypocrisy.
While taking a minor step, EU governments still refuse to end their arms trade and other material support for Israeli crimes, as hundreds of European trade unions and other organizations have demanded.
EU countries sent weapons and military exports to Israel worth $1 billion in 2012-13.
Greece, Italy and Germany continue to carry out joint training with the Israeli army, despite its well-documented war crimes against Palestinians in Gaza and elsewhere.
My colleague David Cronin has meticulously documented the myriad ways the EU funds and actively supports Israel’s war machine.
It is also notable that France has been particularly keen on the labeling of settlement goods. But what, ultimately is its purpose if not to allow consumers to make the choice to boycott these goods?
Yet, France continues to hypocritically prosecute and fine its own citizens for the “crime” of calling for just such boycotts.
As long as such complicity continues, the EU labeling move – as much as it might anger Israel – is a fig leaf for European policies that continue to help Israel kill Palestinians and steal their land.

Nazi comparisons

Israeli foreign ministry spokesperson Emanuel Nahshon said the new labeling policy was “discriminatory” and “smacks of boycott.”
In a sign of their anger, Israeli officials canceled meetings with EU counterparts.
As The New York Times reported, Israeli politicians condemned the move as an “echo of the Holocaust-era branding of European Jews and their storefronts with yellow stars.”
Michael Oren, the former Israeli ambassador to Washington who is now a lawmaker in the government coalition, posted a photo on Facebook of a storefront in Nazi Germany daubed with a Star of David and the word “Jew,” and a sign telling Germans not to frequent Jewish-owned businesses.
Some Israel supporters posted images on social media of the EU flag emblazoned with a Nazi swastika.
The pro-Israel publication The New York Times hammered the point home in its own social media messaging:

Might as well show courage

These unhinged reactions holds two key messages. First, by comparing EU labeling to Nazism, Israel’s backers demonstrate that no tactic is too depraved or indecent.
Using the Nazi genocide to deflect criticism from Israel’s racist, illegal theft of land from Palestinians cheapens the lives of the millions of Jews murdered by Europeans.
But Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu himself recently showed that such disgusting propaganda was fair game when he fabricated the story that Hitler got the idea for the Holocaust from a Palestinian.
The second lesson is one that chronically gutless European leaders should heed.
Once Israeli leaders have labeled you a Nazi, there’s really nothing worse they can say.
So if EU leaders are likened to Hitler for a move as minimal as mere labeling of settlement goods, then why not do something more courageous and effective?
The price is the same, so you might as well support all Palestinian rights and all legitimate means to achieve them.
But sadly, EU leaders are unlikely to absorb this. Instead, they’ve been trying to assuage Israel’s rage by professing a deep desire for even more cooperation and complicity with it, and downplaying the significance of the labeling move.
The most important message is this: EU leaders will continue to coddle Israel’s brutal regime of occupation, apartheid and settler-colonialism unless European citizens maintain and escalate their valiant solidarity campaigns with the Palestinian people.

A Palestinian call for ‘Unarmed Warfare’

Link

By Jonathan Cook – Nazareth
Behind the headline news of clashes between Palestinian youths and armed Israeli soldiers, Israel has – as ever – been quietly tightening its grip on Palestinians’ lives in the occupied territories.
Last week in Hebron, a current flashpoint, 50 embattled families still living in the Tel Rumeida neighborhood faced a new restriction on movement designed to help free up the area for intensified Jewish settlement.
Some of Tel Rumeida’s residents could be seen silently queuing at the local checkpoint to register their ID cards. Anyone not from the neighborhood and not on the military’s list will be barred from entering.
Their response differed starkly from the reaction 21 years ago, when residents faced a similar order. Then, the entire neighborhood refused to register. Israel punished them with a curfew for six months, allowing the families out for a few hours a week to buy food.
How to respond to military orders of this kind stands at the heart of a debate that has revived among Palestinians about the relative merits of armed struggle and non-violent resistance.
A poll in the early summer showed 49 per cent of Palestinians aged between 18 and 22 supported an armed uprising. By September, after the first clashes in Jerusalem, that figure had surged to 67 per cent.
The volatility can in part be explained by an inevitable thirst for revenge as Palestinians watch compatriots being killed and maimed by Israeli soldiers.
But it also reflects a void of Palestinian leadership and strategy. Instead, Palestinians have been buffeted into polarised camps that, put simply, pit Hamas’ rhetoric of armed struggle against the stalled diplomacy of Mahmoud Abbas and his Palestinian Authority.
Non-violence once earnt a central place in Palestinian resistance to occupation. During the first intifada of the late 1980s, Palestinians engaged in mass civil disobedience: they refused to cooperate with the military authorities, burnt their ID cards, refused to pay taxes and held strikes.
That approach never entirely ended. Today it finds expression in the weekly protests and marches by villages against Israel’s steel and concrete barrier eating away at Palestinians’ agricultural lands. These protests remain largely peaceful, even in the face of unceasing army brutality.
But the use of non-violence has been limited to local struggles, waged with the aim of small, isolated victories. It has also invariably coexisted with more violent approaches, from stone-throwing to the current knife attacks.
Much of the blame falls to Abbas, who has appropriated the language of non-violence while failing to harness it to a national strategy of resistance. Even the PA’s support for the villagers’ battles against Israel’s wall have been less than half-hearted.
In the minds of many Palestinians, non-violence has become tainted by association with Abbas’ years of ineffectiveness: his desperate and unsuccessful attempts both to push Israel into peace talks and to cosy up to Washington. The nadir was his declaration of the “sacred” status of the PA’s security coordination with Israel.
It has also not helped that prejudicial demands for non-violence are regularly made of Palestinians by outsiders and dishonest brokers such as Washington. Last month US secretary of state John Kerry singled out Palestinians for blame in the latest clashes. “There’s no excuse for the violence,” he scolded, ignoring decades of Israel’s violent suppression of Palestinian efforts at liberation.
Nonetheless, some Palestinian intellectuals are advocating non-violent resistance as they warn against an armed uprising. Palestinians have a right in international law to resist the occupation, even violently, but this group emphasises the futility of violence faced with Israel’s military superiority. Theirs is a pragmatic argument.
In an article headlined “Don’t go out to die, Palestine needs you alive”, journalist Mohammed Daraghmeh called on Palestinians to “channel the national anger toward mass protest”. Reminding Palestinians that the western world created the conflict and must fix it, Daragmeh warned: “It will not do so if we commit suicide.”
Similarly, Palestinian businessman Sam Bahour has coined the term “smart resistance”, arguing that all the Palestinian factions should commit to non-violent resistance as a way to national liberation.
Both have drawn on earlier strategies of communal solidarity and collective sacrifice – as demonstrated by Tel Rumeida’s inhabitants two decades ago.
One of the architects of the first intifada’s non-violent resistance, Mubarak Awad, recently reminded Palestinians that it is no soft option. “It’s about using nonviolence militantly, like a kind of unarmed warfare,” he told an interviewer.
He suggests instead refusing to carry Israeli-issued IDs, defying curfews, blocking roads, planting trees on sites intended for settlement, tearing down fences, staging sit-ins and and inviting mass arrests to fill to breaking point Israel’s jails.
Such actions require mass participation, mobilizing women, children and the elderly – the very groups likely to be excluded by armed struggle.
And, as Awad notes, non-violence also needs a people trained in its techniques and principles. That is why he has translated into Arabic the teachings of Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther King.
Political organizers and strategists like Awad have always topped Israel’s list for arrest. He was jailed and tortured at the start of the first intifada and later expelled to the US.
The power of disciplined non-violent resistance, he adds, is that it forces on the occupier a heavy burden: to “deal with our willingness to stand up for ourselves with nothing but our bodies and hearts”.
It forces Israelis to “choose what kind of people they are”, and creates division and dissent among the oppressor population, weakening its resolve.
It is a challenging message, especially when Israel is so ruthlessly crushing Palestinian hope and dignity. But Awad argues that it is precisely by demonstrating an irrepressible humanity that Palestinians can again discover hope, reclaim their dignity and win freedom.

Netanyahu's Washington triumph

His visit not only kicked off a process of changing his image, but also asserted Israel's role in the region.

Lamis Andoni

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is right to gloat on his Twitter account about his achievements in the United States capital, as he was able to milk to the maximum Washington's need for his silence, even acquiescence, on the Iran nuclear deal.
His official visit not only kicked off a process of changing his image but, more significantly, asserted a practical Israeli role in shaping the region, especially Syria, thus giving a new meaning to the US-Israel strategic partnership.
Emboldened by his victories that all appeared to have been agreed upon even before his arrival in the US, Netanyahu brazenly demanded American recognition of the Israeli annexation of the occupied Syrian Golan Heights. This after all the Palestinian lives ended by the Israeli army and settlers, and even after US President Barack Obama's dignity was thrown ruthlessly under the wagon of consolidating the US-Israeli imperial goals and interests.
Arena: Debating the pro-Israel lobby in the US
Obama did not confine himself to the usual refrain of "Israel has the right to defend itself" but almost went as far as to condone the Israeli army's brutal suppression of Palestinians by saying "Israel has not just the right, but the obligation to protect itself."
Determinant bargain
But that was not all, as Palestinian blood is the cheaper part of an undeclared but obvious bargain. The statement was simply a requirement to open the bilateral talks on the wider strategic Israeli gains.
Washington's approval to expedite the renewal of the American-Israeli military and defence agreement, which was due in 2017, and to increase the $3.1bn US military aid, were almost a done deal before the talks.
What Netanyahu wanted - and still wants - is much more and he could achieve it all, even though US recognition of the Israeli annexation of the Golan Heights is a bit hard for Washington to fulfil.
Obama did not bow to Netanyahu, but he bowed to the strategic interests at stake, as he acknowledged bolstering Israeli security is about boosting the American security and military infrastructure in the region.

But he also knows how to use such a demand as a bargaining chip as Israel is more likely to seek a clear US and international commitment that the future Syrian regime - regardless of its make-up - will not take a hostile position towards Israel.
It would be enough for Netanyahu that a new Syrian regime, whose existence will rely on Western and Russian agreement and approval, would either enter in open-ended negotiations or even start informal "normalisation with Israel" without challenging the "status quo" of the Golan Heights.
In that context, Netanyahu's visit to Moscow in late September, and securing Israeli-Russian military coordination "to avoid a clash" of their respective military crafts over Syrian skies was necessary to ensure Israeli interests in any future agreed compromise on Syria's future.
Furthermore, rehabilitation of Netanyahu's extremist image and shifting the focus from his disputes with Obama were necessary for guaranteeing a full Israeli role in shaping the region, as well as the silence of Washington - as the Israeli army quells the Palestinian youth resistance of the Israeli occupation.
Thus, there was a tacit cooperation between all bastions of political power and thought centres in Washington who either received or even celebrated Netanyahu, who stressed a carefully worded political message at each appearance.
Strategic interests at stake
Washington turned into a well-produced scene from the theatre of the absurd. As Netanyahu left the White House, he went directly to the anti-Obama conservative American Enterprise Institute (AEI) to receive an award, followed by two stops at the Jewish Federation and the pro-Democrat "liberal" Center for American Progress (CAP).
Netanyahu's appearance at the CAP provoked anger among many liberals, partly because it ended the comfortable divide between pro-Israeli liberals and hawkish Zionists.
The venue was perfect for Netanyahu to deliver his call for "restoring the bipartisan" Republican and Democratic consensus on Israel, especially when only three guests in the audience were allowed to ask questions.

Restoring Israel as "a bi-partisan issue" is crucial to both the Obama administration and Israel: as the former is concerned that the open Obama-Netanyahu rift could diminish the appeal of the Democratic Party on Jewish voters and funders in the next elections, while Israel is worried about the level of support for Israel among the Democrats in the US Congress.
His call at the Jewish Federation "to end the rift over the Iran deal" within the American Jewish community was equally important, as the differences could weaken the strong Israeli lobby as well as obstruct the White House's efforts to sell the Iran nuclear deal to the US Congress.
Yet, it is wrong to assume that Netanyahu's triumph was an act of genius or even a personal triumph; it was rather a triumph of mutual and joint Israeli and American interests and goals that could no longer be hampered by the prolonged Obama-Netanyahu rift.
Pro-Israel Mark Makovsky, who is close to both leaders, revealed that a major "irritant" to the Israeli-American relations was eased when Netanyahu "brokered the resignation" of Economy Minister Arye Deri who was stalling deals with theAmerican Noble consortium over the Leviathan natural gas field in the Mediterranean, and selling gas to both Jordan and Egypt.
Obama did not bow to Netanyahu, but he bowed to the strategic interests at stake, as he acknowledged that bolstering Israeli security is about boosting the American security and military infrastructure in the region.
As in all scripts of the theatre of the absurd, there is a truth that is uncovered - in this case one that puts an end to illusions among Palestinians, Arab leaders and pundits who were betting that the Netanyahu-Obama rift would serve "Arab interests".

My name is Khalid. I'm 24.

I escaped from Syria and I have been in this asylum centre for three months.

Days pass slowly.

I'm waiting for my application to be processed.

I watch the children ride in circles outside.

Life before the Syrian revolution

We had to make ourselves deaf, dumb and blind, to disappearances, murder and torture –

The Syrian Revolution

I joined the protests – but kept it secret from my family.
My mother would have locked me in my room to protect me.
We marched in glorious unity.
When the security forces shot us, it hardened our defiance ...

Detention and torture

They put my feet in a bowl of water – then shocked the water with electric cables.

They electrocuted him and battered him in front of me –
They made me watch.

Rescue and recovery

Reflection

So one day my mum called, voice shaking.

Masked men had come to the house and turned the place over looking for me.

If they found me I would be dead for sure
– and now my family were in danger too.

Khalid finally received asylum in Norway and can begin to start the healing process.
