U.S. DROPS TO 49TH IN WORLD PRESS FREEDOM RANKINGS, WORST SINCE OBAMA BECAME PRESIDENT

By Glenn Greenwald

Link

Each year, Reporters Without Borders issues a worldwide ranking of nations based on the extent to which they protect or abridge press freedom. The group’s 2015 ranking was released this morning, and the United States is ranked 49th.
That is the lowest ranking ever during the Obama presidency, and the second-lowest ranking for the U.S. since the rankings began in 2002 (in 2006, under Bush, the U.S. was ranked 53rd). The countries immediately ahead of the U.S. are Malta, Niger, Burkino Faso, El Salvador, Tonga, Chile and Botswana.
Some of the U.S.’s closest allies fared even worse, including Saudi Arabia (164), Bahrain (163), Egypt (158), the UAE (120), and Israel (101: “In the West Bank, the Israeli security forces deliberately fired rubber bullets and teargas at Palestinian journalists”; 15 journalists were killed during Israeli attack on Gaza; and “the authorities also stepped up control of programme content on their own TV stations during the offensive, banning a spot made by the Israeli NGO B’Tselem that cited the names of 150 children who had been killed in the Gaza Strip”).
To explain the latest drop for the U.S., the press group cited the U.S. government’s persecution of New York Times reporter Jim Risen, as well as the fact that the U.S. “continues its war on information in others, such as WikiLeaks.” Also cited were the numerous arrests of journalists covering the police protests in Ferguson, Missouri (which included The Intercept‘s Ryan Devereaux, who was tear-gassed and shot with a rubber bullet prior to his arrest).
It should come as no surprise that the U.S. continues to plummet in press freedoms under Obama. In October, 2013, the Committee to Protect Freedom issued a scathing denunciation of the U.S. government’s attacks on press freedoms, the first time the U.S. was ever the subject of one of its reports. Written by former Washington Post executive editor Leonard Downie, Jr., it detailed the multiple ways the Obama administration has eroded press freedoms, and concluded:
The administration’s war on leaks and other efforts to control information are the most aggressive I’ve seen since the Nixon administration, when I was one of the editors involved in The Washington Post’s investigation of Watergate. The 30 experienced Washington journalists at a variety of news organizations whom I interviewed for this report could not remember any precedent.
That warning echoed the one previously issued by James Goodale, the General Counsel of the New York Times during the Pentagon Papers battle, who said: “President Obama wants to criminalize the reporting of national security information” and “President Obama will surely pass President Richard Nixon as the worst president ever on issues of national security and press freedom.”

Obama’s tepid, belated condemnation of Chapel Hill murders does little to ease fears

By Ali Abunimah

US President Barack Obama finally issued a condemnation and condolences regarding the brutal execution-stye murders of three young American Muslims in their home in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, on Tuesday that caused shock around the world.
Obama’s statement came after days of mounting anger at his silence, an appeal from the father of two of the victims and a stinging rebuke from Turkey’s president.
“Yesterday, the FBI opened an inquiry into the brutal and outrageous murders of Yusor Mohammad Abu-Salha, Deah Shaddy Barakat and Razan Mohammad Abu-Salha” Obama’s statement reads. “In addition to the ongoing investigation by local authorities, the FBI is taking steps to determine whether federal laws were violated.”
Craig Hicks, a 46-year-old neighbor of the victims with a history of gun-toting harassment, violent threats and anti-religious statements, has been charged with first degree murder for the killings.
“No one in the United States of America should ever be targeted because of who they are, what they look like, or how they worship,” Obama said. “Michelle and I offer our condolences to the victims’ loved ones.”
With those words Obama indirectly acknowledged the victims’ families belief that their loved ones had been targeted because they are Muslim, amid a growing and unchecked atmosphere of anti-Muslim incitement by politicians and media.
Obama’s statement also came after a blaze badly damaged the Quba Islamic Institute in Houston, Texas, early on Friday morning. Houston fire officials suspect arson.

Obama’s silence

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan strongly condemned the silence of Obama and other top US officials over the Chapel Hill murders.
“If you stay silent when faced with an incident like this and don’t make a statement, the world will stay silent toward you,” Erdogan said during a state visit to Mexico on Thursday. “I ask Mr. Obama, where are you, Mr. President?”
It was a question many others were asking, too.
The outrage over Obama’s long silence was compounded by the White House’s initial statement that the president had “no specific reaction” to the killings.
This contrasted with his swift condemnation and condolences in other cases of mass, religiously or politically motivated violence. Many people considered it especially important for the president to push back quickly and forcefully against a rising tide of Islamophobia.
But the president’s belated statement, which fails to specifically name the hate that incited the murder of three young Muslims, does little to instil confidence that he intends to be any more proactive in fighting against bigotry and racism.
Indeed given that Obama is escalating his drone campaign of killing Muslims, including children such as the Yemeni thirteen-year-old Mohammed Tuaiman, the president appears to be very much part of the problem.

“Parking dispute”

Police claims, echoed by the media, that the killings had been the result of a “parking dispute,” also fueled consternation and anger.
The father of Yusor, 21, and Razan, 19, had also appealed to Obama to break his silence.

on Twitter

“This is our country. We’re here to stay. We want to make it safer for all the children of different religions and colors,” Dr. Mohammed Abu-Salha, said shortly before the Thursday funeral for the three youths in Chapel Hill which was attended by thousands of people and livestreamed by the local NBC affiliate.
“The president needs to pay attention,” Abu-Salha said. “They need to have an elaborate investigation. This is not a parking dispute. These children were executed.”
Dr. Suzanne Barakat, the elder sister of Deah Barakat, 23, also denounced the way media and officials had downplayed possible hate-related motives for the murders.
“I think it’s absolutely insulting, insensitive and outrageous that the first thing they come out and say and issue a statement that this is a parking dispute,” Barakat told MSNBC:

Promising lives cut short

Deah, Yusor and Razan are being remembered in vigils and protests against Islamophobia being held around the country.

Deah Barakat had been involved along with Yusor in providing relief and support to Syria refugees. He was a second-year doctoral student in dentistry and Yusor had just been accepted into a dental program at the University of North Carolina.
An online fundraiser Barakat had launched to support that relief work had raised $345,000 by today, as donations poured in in tribute.
The medical charity, the Palestine Children’s Relief Fund, also revealed that Deah had taken part in a dental care mission to the occupied West Bank in 2012.

on Twitter

Razan Abu-Salha studied architecture and environmental design at North Carolina State University, and was an avid photographer.

“We’re all one.”

The impact of the murders on the broader US Muslim and Arab American communities has been felt deeply.
“The overwhelming sense of grief many Muslim Americans felt following the cold-blooded murder[s] … hit us directly in our hearts,” wrote Chicago-area independent journalist and teacher Deanna Othman in the Chicago Tribune.
“We are them. They represent us, everything we grew up with – our lifestyles, our identities, our faith,” Othman writes. “They embody what our communities tried to instill, and continue to struggle to instill, in young Muslims growing up in this country – a sense of pride in their faith and a sense of devotion to their fellow man.”
The murders, Othman wrote, generated a sense of despair that nothing Muslims could do would ever allow them to accepted.
It has also been revealed that in May 2014, Yusor Abu-Salha recorded a conversationwith her third-grade teacher Mussarut Jabeen for the public radio project Story Corps.
In his statement, Obama quoted Yusor’s painfully resonant words from that conversation: “Growing up in America has been such a blessing. It doesn’t matter where you come from. There’s so many different people from so many different places, of different backgrounds and religions – but here, we’re all one.”
The America Yusor loved is the one her murderer, and so many others inciting racial and religious hatred, fear and want to see destroyed.

WATCH WHAT THE HOUTHIS DO TO THOSE WHO RESIST THEM

The HSBC scandal and the Middle East

What we know so far

By Brian Whitaker
Switzerland, because of its secretive banking system, has long been a haven for dictators and criminals to stash their ill-gotten gains, as well as a place where the wealthy have accounts in order to avoid – or evade – paying tax in their home countries.
Over the last few days leaked files relating to some 100,000 HSBC clients and accounts in Switzerland have been causing a huge stir in Europe, mainly because of tax-dodging by some prominent figures and HSBC's apparent connivance in it.
The leaks also revealed billions of dollars deposited with HSBC in Switzerland by clients from the Middle East, and so far these have not received much media attention. This blog post is an attempt to compile what is known so far about the thousands of accounts which have a Middle East connection.
Making use of data published by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ), I have produced a list showing the size of deposits, plus numbers of clients and accounts relating to countries in the Middle East. The list covers Arab League countries, plus Israel and Iran.

At their combined maximum in 2006/2007, these 14 accounts held over $27.5 million. He was beneficial owner of three of them: Polter Investments Inc; Lorie Limited, set up in 1999 and closed in 2004; and Drex Technologies S.A., which was registered in Luxembourg and was sanctioned in 2012 by several countries including the United States and Canada and by the European Union.

"We’re All One": UNC Shooting Victim Yusor Abu-Salha’s StoryCorps Interview Months Before Death

Democracy Now!

"Some 5,000 people attend the North Carolina funeral of the three Muslim students murdered in Chapel Hill on Thursday as the FBI announced it has opened a probe into the killings. Today, we hear from one of the victims, Yusor Abu-Salha, in her own words. Last year, Abu-Salha went into a StoryCorps booth to record an interview with her third grade teacher, Mussarut Jabeen of the Al-Iman School in Raleigh. "Growing up in America has been such a blessing. And although in some ways I do stand out, such as the hijab I wear on my head, the head covering, there are still so many ways that I feel so embedded in the fabric that is, you know, our culture,” Abu-Salha said. The other two victims, Deah Barakat and Razan Mohammad Abu-Salha, also attended Al-Iman...."

US wars in Middle East are here to stay

Comment: Obama says he will limit presidential powers of war, but what he says and what happens in Iraq and beyond are two different matters, says Said Arikat.
On Wednesday, 11 February 2015, President Barack Obama asked Congress for formal authorisation for military action against the Islamic State group, even though US bombers have been pummelling the group since last August.

The US president has been satisfied to keep things as they were for the past six months. The Republican Congress was all too content to stay on the sidelines, because Republicans are the "tough" party that likes US wars everywhere.

War is good for business, and therefore good for the Republicans. The Democrats are liberal softies, who are more likely to support hybrid cars than F-35 fighters at $200m each.

And so Obama and the Republicans, who otherwise despise each other, found a convenient common ground in war.

The Congressional leadership (Republicans and Democrats alike) didn't want to deal with an authorisation vote before the midterm elections of last November; then they didn’t want to deal with authorisation in the lame-duck session.

Obama, the one-time constitutional law professor, knows he also has to remain within the dictates of the constitution, which assigns responsibility for waging wars to Congress. With a caveat. It is called the "War Powers Act", or more specifically the War Powers Act Resolution of 1973 - not the original of 1941.
Last exit Mosul: residents brave bombs and bullets on only open route to freedom

The law states the president must notify Congress within 48 hours of committing armed forces to military action, and forbids operations lasting more than 60 days, with a further 30-day withdrawal period, without an authorisation of the use of military force or a declaration of war.

That is still a whole 60 days of unadulterated US military might - both weapon and treasure - without a question.

George W Bush upped the ante with the passage of The Authorisation for Use of Military Force (AUMF), which he signed (passed as SJ Res 23 by Congress on September 14, 2001), and became law on September 18, 2001.

This authorised him to use US forces against those responsible for the attacks a week earlier, on September 11, 2001.

It granted the president the authority to use all "necessary and appropriate force" against those whom he determined "planned, authorised, committed or aided" the September 11 attacks, and those who sheltered the attackers.

Bush followed this up with "HJ Res 114" on 16 October, 2002, which was crafted and designed for the invasion of Iraq.
Obama says he wants to limit his own powers.
But wait a second... [AFP]

Ironically, Obama, who rode his high anti-Iraq war horse into the White House, promising to end this kind of abuse of presidential power in war, was quite content - even as he spoke of his request to Congress on Wednesday - to say he had only used powers granted to him by the SJ Res 23 bill.

The president boasted: "More than 2,000 coalition airstrikes have pounded these terrorists. We're disrupting their command and control and supply lines. We're destroying their tanks... their training camps, and the oil and gas facilities and infrastructure that fund their operations. We're taking out their commanders, their fighters, and their leaders."

He emphasised: "In Iraq, local forces have largely held the line and in some places have pushed ISIL [an alternate nomenclature for the Islamic State group] back. In Syria, ISIL failed in its major push to take the town of Kobane, losing countless fighters in the process - fighters who will never again threaten innocent civilians."

He promised: "The resolution we've submitted today does not call for the deployment of US ground combat forces to Iraq or Syria. It is not the authorisation of another ground war, like Afghanistan or Iraq.

"This resolution repeals the 2002 authorisation of force for the invasion of Iraq and limits this new authorisation to three years. I do not believe America's interests are served by endless war, or by remaining on a perpetual war footing.

"As a nation, we need to ask the difficult and necessary questions about when, why and how we use military force."

So is Obama stepping back into his pre-presidency anti-war mode? The proposal says explicitly that it does not authorise "enduring offensive ground combat operations". They actually place limits on the duration and the scope of military actions - limits that previous presidents have rejected.

But not so fast. There are many thousands of US soldiers already in Iraq. "The 2,600 American troops in Iraq today largely serve on bases - and, yes, they face the risks that come with service in any dangerous environment," he said. "But they do not have a combat mission. They are focused on training Iraqi forces, including Kurdish forces."

He added that Iraqis, Kurds, Jordanians and Syrians can and do fight for themselves, and the US "must require them to do those things".

But listening to Pentagon leaders, one gets the feeling that a much larger military campaign, with US troops being in the thick of it, is in the offing.

Obama pulled out of Iraq altogether at the end of 2011 after the obstinate then-Iraqi prime minister, Nouri al-Maliki, rejected a plan that would give a force of about 10,000 troops immunity from Iraqi prosecution.

The 2,600 US troops back in Iraq today have that immunity, and the Obama administration has plans to boost their number.

A knowledgeable source tells me that the US wants 10,000 soldiers in Iraq, and that the current Iraqi prime minister, Haider al-Abadi, has already agreed to their immunity from Iraq prosecution, with Tehran's approval.

Obama and the Pentagon know quite well that only ground forces will liberate Mosul, and then go on to cross the Syrian border. They also know that Arab members of the anti-IS alliance - with the possible exception of Jordan - are unwilling to send soldiers into other Arab countries.

America's wars in the Middle East are here to stay.

Tawakkol Karman: We must have a new revolution against the Houthi coup

Tawakkol Karman

The Yemeni activist and Nobel Peace Prize winner Tawakkol Karman appealed to the youth of the 11 February Revolution on its fourth anniversary to make that date mark the birth of a new revolution until the coup falls. Yemen is at a crossroads, she added, either drowning in chaos or breaking violent choices.
In a statement issued on yesterday – the anniversary of the country's first uprising, Karman added that this new revolutionary wave will not stop until the weapons of the army are recaptured, the militias dissolved, and the modern Yemeni state established as a state of freedom, dignity, justice, equality, welfare, democracy, peace and law – values for which the youth rose-up in February 2011.
Karman called on the youth to be present in all freedom arenas and squares in Yemen to renew the commitment and struggle for Yemen, which is at a crossroads today, and it will either sink into chaos and war or the youth can break the violent choices with their great popular and peaceful will.
She noted that this anniversary is passing while Yemen is not well after the Houthi militias have led their coup against the Yemeni people's will through occupying their capital, dropping their sovereign state institutions, robbing their camps, exhausting the state with wars, murders, the confiscation of freedoms and violations of rights, in an attempt to destroy all the rules of political work and blow up all the traditions of institutional state so as to impose their unilateral will to fulfil their whims of exclusivity and domination, and to implement regional agendas.
"You are gathered today on the revolution's anniversary," she added, "to prove, with your peaceful masses in squares and arenas, that anyone, whoever they are, cannot defy Yemen's will... And you are invited to clearly say that what was done by the Houthi militias is absolutely a coup, and must be overthrown in order to preserve Yemen's security, stability and unity as well as the security of the region and international peace and security."

NADIM IS THE BEST!
