"The Israeli military says four paratroopers, including two officers, have been critically wounded by mortar fire in the northern Gaza Strip.

"Four paratroopers, two of them officers, were seriously wounded, possibly by friendly fire," an army spokesman said Saturday.

Hamas-run al-Aqsa TV has also reported that two Israeli commanders and two soldiers were wounded in gun battles in Jabaliya.

"The circumstances under which they were injured is being looked into, as well as the possibility they were injured by friendly fire," according to the Israeli military.

The injured paratroopers have reportedly been engaged in intense fighting on the outskirts of Gaza City for several days.

Brigade commander Lieutenant-Colonel Avi Blot and several other fighters were also injured in clashes with Palestinian fighters a few days ago, Haaretz reported. Seven other brigade fighters were also wounded hours later by antitank missiles, one of whom sustained serious injuries. "
