"13/11/2009 Syria's President Bashar al-Assad said Friday that he had no "Israeli partner" ready to push forward the Middle East peace process, [gee whiz!]accusing Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of not being serious about peace.

Assad told reporters he was not willing to hold face-to-face negotiations with the Israeli leader and called instead for lower-level dialogue under Turkish mediation....."


....And since Israel is not serious about "peace," as the Rabbit has finally concluded, here he is seen with his top commanders devising his military plans for "resistance."

......Stay tuned for another 35 years, until the Rabbit decides on the "time and place" to start his "resistance."

If I were Netanyahu, I would be deeply worried.

"11/11/2009 Syrian President Bashar al-Assad said on Wednesday that Syria was not setting conditions on making peace with Israel, but that it did have rights that must be restored, the official Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) reported.

"Resistance (to Israeli occupation) forms the core of our policy, both in the past and in the future.[ That is a good one, Mr. Rabbit, tell us some more fiction!] We do not put forward conditions on making peace, but we do have rights that we will not renounce," he told a meeting of Arab political parties.

"If we are strong we will achieve the peace we seek. Resistance is at the heart of the new Middle East we have begun to build," Assad said......"

And his "resistance" starts in......Paris!

Syrian president pays work visit to France on Thursday

" DAMASCUS, Nov. 12 (Xinhua) -- Syrian President Bashar al-Assad is scheduled to pay a two-day work visit to France on Thursday, during which he will meet with his French counterpart Nicolas Sarkozy and other French officials, the official SANA news agency reported.....

Sarkozy added that the talks with Assad will deal with the Middle East peace process and the situation in Iraq and Lebanon.

In a statement to SANA, French Ambassador to Syria Eric Chevallier said Assad's visit to France is very important, "it paves the way for a new era of bilateral relations in light of the common will to give a new momentum to the Syrian-French relations, based on historic roots."....."

The Rabbit was apparently summoned by Sarkozy who wants to follow up his discussions with Netanyahu, just concluded in Paris.

Deaths as Syrian forces 'storm mosque'

At least six reportedly killed, but authorities blame "armed gang" for violence in southern city of Daraa.

"Security forces have attempted to storm a mosque in the southern Syrian city of Daraa, reportedly killing at least six people.

The government, however, blamed the violence on an "armed gang", [This sounds just like Gaddafi! I am waiting for the Rabbit's speech, in which he will describe the protesters as rats, and Al-Qa'ida supporters. The Rabbit will also repeat, "The Syrian people love me and will die for me!"] according to the state-run SANA news agency.

Residents said heavy gunfire was heard near the Omari mosque in the early hours of Wednesday in the city, which has been the scene of anti-government protests since Friday.

"It seems that security forces may be trying to storm the complex. It is not clear because electricity has been cut off. Tear gas is also being used," one resident told the Reuters news agency.

Protesters calling for political freedoms and an end to corruption had said earlier that they were going to remain in the mosque until their demands were met.

Mohammed Al Abdallah, an exiled Syrian rights activist living in the US, said he had been communicating with people in Daraa who told him that a doctor was among those killed.

"Security forces opened fire, they used bombs and live ammunition," he told Al Jazeera. "There are many injuries, including women and children."

He said electricity had been cut off before the attack and that security forces were preventing ambulances from entering the centre of Daraa, where the mosque is located......"

"07/03/2010 Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and visiting Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu on Sunday discussed the prospects of resuming indirect talks between Syria and Israel.

Their talks in Damascus focused on "the principles capable of re-launching the peace process" on the Syrian-Israeli track, which have been frozen for more than a year, Syria's official SANA news agency said.

Davutoglu told Assad that Turkey -- which has brokered indirect talks between Syria and Israel in the past -- was willing "to go forwards to achieve peace," SANA said.

But Assad said Israel was not ready for peace "despite the presence of a Turkish honest-broker who has been working with Syria to establish peace and security in the region," the agency reported.

The Turkish foreign minister has said Ankara is ready to mediate between Israel and Syria provided there is a "political will" on both sides......"

No one believes that these theatrics mean anything. This move is just as sincere as the Rabbit's declaration that he "ended the state of emergency" just before he launched a major campaign of slaughter, torture and mass disappearance of tens of thousands of Syrians.

No one will be fooled by such move. This entire regime has to be brought down and the Rabbit and his criminal relatives and cronies, such as Makhlouf, brought to trial.

"Syrian tycoon Rami Makhlouf, a cousin of President Bashar al-Assad and focus of anti-corruption protests, is quitting business [Ha, Ha, Ha.....Sure! And Angry Arab is really Lady Gaga. The announcement came on the eve of weekly Muslim prayers, which have usually witnessed the biggest protests and the heaviest bloodshed of the three-month unrest, and as army units circled two towns in the north of the country....."

Report: Syria wants 'public' peace talks with Israel

"Syria has recently relayed a message to Israel conveying the county's interest in peace talks with Israel, but on the condition that talks will be held openly and not under fire, Hezbollah-affiliated Lebanese newspaper Al-Akhbar reported Saturday.

According to the report, Damascus passed the message on to Israel via Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

According to the newspaper report, the Syrians demand a series of conditions in that message that must be fulfilled before it will commence a peace process, the first of which is the condition that talks will not be held "under fire." The Syrians explained that by "under fire" they do not mean an armed conflict between Israel and Syria, but rather the conflict between Israel and the Palestinians.

Another Syrian condition is that the talks be held publicly, and accompanied by Israeli gestures to assure the Syrians that they are ready to withdraw from all "occupied Arab territories," Al-Akhbar reported.

A third condition, according to the report, is that Israel hold simultaneous diplomatic talks with Lebanon and the Palestinians alongside peace talks with Syria.

However, "knowledgeable" sources told Al-Akhbar that Damascus estimates that the United States isn't interested in Israel holding talks with Syria, and will act to prevent such talks from taking place....."

This is all very reminiscent of Sadat's early moves towards Israel; Bashar Rabbit wants to cut a deal, plain and simple.

Syria's so far timid moves bring to mind the Arabic expression likening the Rabbit's behavior to a woman interested in sex, but being afraid of getting pregnant.

"US officials say Israel targeted advanced anti-ship cruise missiles near Syria's principal port city, Latakia, in an air attack this month, the New York Times reported.

The officials say the attack on 5 July near Latakia targeted a type of Russian-made missile called the Yakhont that Russia had sold to the Syrian government, the paper's website reported. Russia is a key political ally and arms supplier of Syrian president Bashar al-Assad's regime.
The officials provided no details on the strike, including the extent of the damage and how many missiles were used. The Times reported that the officials declined to be identified because they were discussing intelligence reports.
Israel maintains it is not involved in Syria's two-year-old civil war except to stop weapons transfers. The strike near Latakia was the fourth known air strike in Syria by Israel this year, the newspaper reported.
The attack came to light after Syrian rebels said they were not behind the explosions in Latakia on 5 July, according to the Times. Neither US nor Israeli officials have commented publicly on the report.
Reports surfaced earlier this year that Russia had delivered an advanced version of its Yakhont anti-ship cruise missile to Assad's regime even though Russia had said it was committed to peace talks. Those reports prompted the US to complain in May about an "ill-timed" step by Russia.
Such weapons would help to upgrade significantly Syria's capacity to target manned planes, drones and incoming missiles and would complicate efforts to enforce a no-fly zone over Syria if the US and other nations were to initiate one."

US raid is a warning to Assad

".....Yet the irony of yesterday's raid is that in recent months Syria had tightened control of the border, even winning public recognition from the former US commander, General David Petraeus. Analysts say that one reason for this tightening of control was alarming evidence of "blowback" from al-Qaida-type groups mounting attacks in Syria and Lebanon.

Still, Syria has refused point-blank to renew intelligence cooperation with the Americans until they send an ambassador back to Damascus. US officials have made no secret of their frustration: so the unofficial message from Washington is that "if the Syrians won't deal with this problem we'll do it ourselves".

It is possible — though unlikely — that the decision to carry out yesterday's raid into sovereign territory was taken by a US military commander without seeking clearance from Washington. Assuming it was cleared at the political level, it may have been intended as a broader warning to Syria at a time when the US and Israel say openly that they are trying to persuade President Bashar al-Assad to detach himself from his alliance with Iran and coax him into meaningful peace talks with the Jewish state.

Indeed, the concept behind the raid appears to have borrowed from Israel [COMMENT: The "concept"? It is simply that the Rabbit is a punching bag and he will do nothing in return; all he cares about is for his regime to survive and for him to stay in power. To the contrary he will try even harder to become more "pro-West." Notice the current visit by his fat boy foreign minister to London. Could an address by the Rabbit to the Knesset, delivered in person, be far?], which last September bombed the alleged site of a nuclear reactor in northern Syria — even as it was contemplating pursuing peace talks with Damascus over the Golan Heights. This February's assassination of a key Hizbullah leader in the heart of Damascus was seen as another warning "message" to Assad......."

"....As Patrick Seale, a longstanding expert on Syria points out, Assad inherited "a fossilised system of governance" from his father.

"Like other Arabs," Seale says, "Syrians want real political freedoms, the release of political prisoners, an independent judiciary, the punishment of corrupt bigwigs, a free press, a new law on political parties allowing for genuine pluralism ... and an end, once and for all, to arbitrary arrest, police brutality and torture."

The regime keeps hinting that such reforms are on the cards – but only after tranquillity has been restored. If that is the intention, though, mass arrests and the killing of demonstrators seem an odd way to go about convincing people of it.

Seale, who has been more inclined than many to give Assad the benefit of the doubt when it comes to reformist intentions, now acknowledges that his chances of stabilising the situation are slim. To do so, he would have to call a halt to the killing of protesters, take the lead towards reform and in effect carry out "a silent coup against the hardliners".

That all looks very doubtful, not least because the hardliners, as well as the "corrupt bigwigs" include members of his own family. Had he been seriously planning to take on the hardliners, he might also have distanced himself from the brutality of the crackdown on protesters. Instead, he has done the opposite by appearing in photographs dressed in military garb – a sudden change from his more usual appearance in suit and tie."

Under Saddam Hussein's rule, his feared Fedayeen militia carried out similar acts, and in one instance were videoed hunting a fox and then tearing it apart with their teeth.

Troops paraded round in shining new vehicles decked with pink ribbons and flowers, but Iraq's Deputy Chief of Staff, Lieutenant General Nasier Abadi, conceded there were problems with procuring equipment and setting up supply lines, for which the Iraqi forces still depend largely on U.S. support.

One soldier, Corporal Ali Abdul Hasan, said the army needed everything from helicopters to guns. "Some vehicles arrived with parts missing and we have old weapons. They didn't even give us pistols," he said.

HANDOVER SYMBOLIC

The handover was largely symbolic since U.S. forces have rarely ventured into the holy city, home to the shrine of Imam Ali, whose death in the 7th century caused the great schism in Islam between Shias and Sunnis.

"Iran has brokered a critical deal with its regional neighbours that could see a pro-Tehran government installed in Iraq, a move that would shift the fragile country sharply away from a sphere of western influence.

The Guardian can reveal that the Islamic republic was instrumental in forming an alliance between Iraq's Nouri al-Maliki, who is vying for a second term as prime minister, and the country's powerful radical Shia cleric leader, Moqtada al-Sadr.

The deal – which involved Syria, Lebanon's Hezbollah and the highest authorities in Shia Islam – positions Maliki as a frontrunner to return as leader despite a seven-month stalemate between Iraq's feuding political blocs.

It also positions Iran as a potent buffer to US interests at a time when America is looking to change its relationship with Iraq from military overlords to civilian partners.

Senior officials in Iraq have given the Guardian details of the behind-the-scenes Iranian campaign which began in earnest in early September........

Within days of the withdrawal, Sadr, who lives in self-imposed exile in the Iranian city of Qom, was told by the Iranians to reconsider his position as a vehement opponent of Maliki. Sadr's party in Iraq had won more than 10% of the 325 seats in play at the election making him a powerbroker in the formation of any new government......

Days after the Iranian move, an Iraqi push followed. Throughout September Maliki sent his chief of staff to Qom along with a key leader in his Dawa party, Abdul Halim al-Zuhairi. They were, according to the Guardian's source, joined by a senior figure in Lebanese Hezbollah's politburo, Mohamed Kawtharani, as well as arch-US foe General Qassem Suleimani, the head of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards' Al-Quds Brigades, whose forces the US military blames for causing more than one quarter of its combat casualties in Iraq throughout almost eight years of war.....

...... In return, Assad visited Tehran the day after the Sadrist support for Maliki was announced. Two other Shia Islamic spiritual leaders, Grand Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and Lebanese Hezbollah leader, Hassan Nasrallah, are also believed to have endorsed the Sadrist move.

It is understood that the full withdrawal of all US troops after a security agreement signed between Baghdad and Washington at the end of 2011 was also sought by Sheikh Nasrallah......

Although that is the official US line, unofficially Washington expected to retain a force in Iraq after December 2011, as well as bases to protect oil interests, to buttress the Iraqi government in the event of a destabilising uprising and to help contain Iran.

Maliki will arrive in Tehran today for the talks with Ahmedinejad. He visited Syria late last week for a detente with Assad."

".....According to Guardian sources, Maliki's renewed grasp on power and the Sadrists' elevation as influence brokers have been brought about by a consortium of the Middle East's most-powerful Shia Islamic players, whose power bases are rooted in the region's other main player, arch US foe Iran.

It has been spearheaded by the Islamic Dawa party, which opposed Saddam Hussein from a base in Tehran during the Ba'athist years, as well as by Maliki's adviser, Tareq Najim Abdullah. Sadr and Ayatollah Kazem al-Haeri, a key exiled figure, who has acted as Sadr's godfather, also led the way.

Qassem Suleimani, head of the al-Quds brigades, a division of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps, Iran's president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, the Syrian president, Bashar al-Assad, and the head of Lebanese Hezbollah's politburo, Mohammed Kawtharani, also heavily influenced the process. Above them all, two Shia Islamic overlords, Grand Ayatollah Khameini, and Hezbollah's Hassan Nasrallah are understood to have been involved in getting Sadr onside.....

Suleimani has led the Quds force for the past 20 years. "He runs Iran's policy in Iraq," said a senior Iraqi official. "There is no dispute about this."

Suleimani is also a key link to Hezbollah in Lebanon and to Hamas in Gaza, supplying weapons, money and training to help oppose Israel.....

...He (Sadr) sought two of Shia Islam's highest authorities to ratify what was being put to him – Khameini and Hezbollah's leader, Hassan Nasrallah.

Sadr was won over, but Nasrallah's name came with a condition. According to the source, when Nasrallah, who remained in Beirut, was consulted, he asked for a return guarantee from Maliki that the US military would disappear completely from Iraq by the end of 2011.....

.....According to a senior Iraqi government official in the days afterwards, Assad told his advisers: "Our Iranian friends want Maliki, and Maliki it is.".....

Publicly, however, the Dawa party is maintaining a different line. "There is no contradiction between the Iranian point of view and the US view in forming a new government," said Zuhairi. "For example, the Americans have said this will be a Shia-led government. So, I say the Iraqi project is a reconciliation between Iran and the US."......"


COMMENT:

Needless to say, my respect for Sayyed Nasrallah has gone down another notch. While I was hoping that he would play a unifying and pro-Arab role in Iraq, he was playing a blatantly Sectarian and pro-Iran role. This is adding fuel to the fire and would only weaken support for Nasrallah throughout the Arab world.

As to the Rabbit, what can I say? Rabbits are known for their agility and for their ability to change direction and run fast.

The Kissinger Doctrine in Libya

It is increasingly clear that the Western imperial powers, with Arab reactionary regimes cover, are putting into effect in Libya what I refer to as the Kissinger doctrine.

Let me explain. During the Iraq-Iran war, Kissinger used to say that the US strategy is to keep both countries fighting (and exhausting each other) as long as possible. He said that if either country was getting ready to keel over, then the US would help (with arms, intelligence, etc) just enough so that it gets back on its feet and stays in the fight as long as possible. That way the killing and destruction, on both sides, are maximized. The strategy worked and until today, both countries (and the region as a whole), are still paying the price.

A similar strategy was used within Iraq, after the invasion, by encouraging Sunnis, Shias and Kurds to slaughter each other. The US military took turns in supporting each element of the triangle, and sometimes at the same time.

I am afraid that the same strategy is at work in Libya. After decades of describing Gaddafi as the "mad dog of Tripoli," the West declared that he was rehabilitated once the right price was extracted from him. Arms, oil deals and even favorable publicity flowed after that.

Those same US/British/French arms were, and continue to be used, to slaughter the Libyan people and to keep the "mad dog" in power.

The Western imperialists waited, wringing their hands, until the revolutionaries in Libya were in retreat and almost cornered in the last stronghold of Benghazi, to miraculously pull the rabbit out of the hat and supposedly decided to intervene to stop the "mad dog".

We were told yesterday that military action would not be limited to just enforcing a no-fly zone. We were also told that the Western militaries, led by those fearsome air forces of Qatar, UAE and SA, would be "in action" in a matter of hours.

A day later we are told that military "coordination and preparations" are under way. In the meantime the "mad dog" continues his heavy bombardment of Misratah and other cities.

What is really going on?

I think that the game plan is to get both sides to slaughter each other and to destroy the country. As the revolutionaries get exhausted the US will install its own Libyan Karzai who will give the US everything it asks for, including military bases in Libya.

If on the other hand the revolutionaries are not worth their salt and even a better deal can be struck with the "mad dog," then after he is weakened and his wings clipped, a new round of rehabilitation would ensue. Tony Blair is always ready to save his friend in Tripoli and to make a few bucks in the process.

It is imperative that a wise and mature Libyan revolutionary leadership understands how this game is played and not to count on the US/NATO, with the help of the great democracies of SA, UAE and Jordan, to rescue them. They better depend on themselves fast, and get over their illusions.

"The news that Bahrain's government has withdrawn its financial support from students who attended a peaceful anti-regime demonstration in Britain highlights differing attitudes towards protest between western countries and most of those in the Middle East.

Though the Bahraini regime's action has enraged the British government, few Arabs would find it surprising: reprisals against those who step out of line are almost par for the course.

One important reason why repressive regimes have survived for so long is that vast numbers of people depend on them economically – sometimes as students with scholarships, but more often as employees in a vast and under-worked government bureaucracy.

In Syria, for example, it has been estimated that as many as half the country's citizens depend to some extent on government pay cheques which could be in jeopardy if their loyalty to the regime was called into question.....

In Syria, where the regime is preparing to lift the state of emergency and replace it with a law "which regulates the process of demonstrating", the authorities keep emphasising that one of the law's main purposes will be to "protect demonstrators".

This seems to hinge on what in many countries would be regarded as a strange notion: that anyone who demonstrates against the government is liable to be set upon immediately by outraged citizens. The Egyptian regime of Hosni Mubarak went to some lengths to prove the truth of this, by employing plainclothes thugs – the baltagiyya – to beat up demonstrators, and several other regimes use similar tactics.

While the Syrian regime now seems willing to allow demonstrations calling for reform, it draws the line at "sabotage". "There are clear differences between the demands for reform and the intentions of creating chaos and sabotage," President Bashar al-Assad said at the weekend.

Maybe Assad thinks the differences are clear, but until he spells them out we cannot be sure. What one person regards as legitimate protest another may regard as dangerous subversion."

"Ali Abdullah Saleh, the Yemeni president, has reportedly been injured in an attack on the presidential palace in the capital, Sanaa.
