A GOOD INTERVIEW WITH GILBERT ACHCAR

Al-Jazeera Video: Syria forces 'targeting' civilians in Aleppo

"Syria's second-city of Aleppo is bearing the scars of more than two months of attacks by government warplanes, tanks and heavy artillery as the army battles to dislodge rebels who claim to control 60 per cent of the northern metropolis.

"We don't have enough weapons, they [the Syrian army] don't have enough men," Abu Haidar, a rebel fighter the city's southwest Saif al-Dawla district, told the AFP news agency on Saturday.

At least 200,000 people have fled the city since late July when the increasingly bloody conflict spread to Aleppo, a once thriving manufacturing and commercial hub where war has now left a trail of destruction, with bombed out buildings and shuttered shops.

Veil Falls Over Egyptian Media

By Cam McGrath

"CAIRO, Aug 25 2012 (IPS) - The former regime of Hosni Mubarak tightly controlled the press and intimidated journalists who dared to criticise it. Now it appears the Muslim Brotherhood has adopted similar tactics to stifle dissent.

Commentators have accused the once-banned Islamic movement, whose leaders have risen to control Egypt’s parliament, presidency and many state institutions, of using its new political muscle to dictate media policy and appointments. In recent weeks, the group has extended its influence over the state press while allegedly attempting to silence journalists who hold critical views against it.

“We’re seeing an escalation (in pressure) by those affiliated to the Muslim Brotherhood against freedom of expression in Egypt,” says Sherif Etman, spokesman for the Egyptian Organisation for Human Rights (EOHR).They’re using some of the same techniques to repress the media as Mubarak.”....."

"....But perhaps the foremost challenge facing the Egyptian president is how to assert real national sovereignty and independence in the face of tremendous pressures coming from all directions, foreign and domestic, in order to pull Egypt back to the U.S.-Israel orbit regardless of the will of the Egyptian people. That is clearly a challenge that cannot be overcome through issuing a presidential proclamation or ordering a reshuffle."

The Pursuit of Julian Assange Is an Assault on Freedom and a Mockery of Journalism

by John Pilger, August 24, 2012

"The British government’s threat to invade the Ecuadorean embassy in London and seize Julian Assange is of historic significance. David Cameron, the former PR man to a television industry huckster and arms salesman to sheikdoms, is well placed to dishonor international conventions that have protected Britons in places of upheaval. Just as Tony Blair’s invasion of Iraq led directly to the acts of terrorism in London on July 7, 2005, so Cameron and Foreign Secretary William Hague have compromised the safety of British representatives across the world.

Threatening to abuse a law designed to expel murderers from foreign embassies, while defaming an innocent man as an “alleged criminal,” Hague has made a laughing stock of Britain across the world, though this view is mostly suppressed in Britain. The same brave newspapers and broadcasters that have supported Britain’s part in epic bloody crimes, from the genocide in Indonesia to the invasions of Iraq and Afghanistan, now attack the “human rights record” of Ecuador, whose real crime is to stand up to the bullies in London and Washington......"

Syria crisis: France backs no-fly zone - live updates

Refugees top 200,000

The number of Syrian refugees has topped 200,000, already surpassing the projection of 185,000 set out by the UN refugee agency for the end of this year (via Reuters).

The total reflects an increase of some 30,000 in the last week alone to Turkey, Lebanon, Iraq and Jordan, but also takes into account a change in the way the agency counts those in Jordan, the UN high commissioner for refugees said. It also expressed concern about how the violence in Lebanon was impacting on its work.

Adrian Edwards told a news briefing in Geneva:

We are now at a much higher level of 202,512 refugees in the surrounding region. The deteriorating security situation in Lebanon is hampering our work to help refugees fleeing Syria's conflict, though operations are continuing.

More than 3,500 people fled to Turkey over the last 24 hours, Turkey's disaster and emergency management directorate (Afad) said, one of the highest daily refugee flows since the start of the uprising last year.

The new arrivals bring the number of Syrian refugees now sheltering in Turkey to more than 78,000, Afad said. There were some 44,000 refugees registered at the end of July....

France has said it is prepared to to take part in enforcing a partial no-fly zone over Syria.

French defence minister Jean-Yves Le Drian cautioned that closing the Arab nation's entire airspace would be tantamount to "going to war" and require a willing international coalition that does not yet exist but he urged the international community to consider backing a no-fly zone over parts of Syria. He told France 24 television that Paris would participate in a full no-fly operation if it followed international legal principles. But for now, he suggested that a partial closure — which Hillary Clinton said Washington was considering — should be studied....."

Newspaper editor detained, Muslim Brotherhood take control of state media

Published on Thursday 23 August 2012

"Reporters Without Borders is alarmed by the restrictions on media freedom resulting from recent decisions by Egypt’s newly-elected authorities.

It is also very worried about today’s decision by a criminal court judge in Giza to detain Islam Afifi, the editor of the daily Al-Dostour, until he is tried on charges of publishing lies about the president and endangering Egypt’s interests and stability.

Afifi was charged in response to many complaints about the newspaper’s 11 August issue, which had a front-page story warning that the Muslim Brotherhood could turn Egypt into an "emirate." The complaints also led to a court order under which copies of the issue were seized.

"This is a sad day for media freedom in Egypt because, for the first time since the January 2011 revolution, a professional journalist has been jailed for what he has written,” Reporters Without Borders said. "The judicial authorities are trampling on the desire for freedom that the Egyptian people expressed during the 2011 and 2012 protests. We call for Afifi’s immediate release."

Shortly before the judge issued his detention order, Afifi told Agence France-Presse he was the victim of a "political" prosecution......."

By Azmi Bishara

COMMENT

US policy concerning Syria brings to mind Henry Kissinger's famous quote during the Iraq-Iran war, that "It's a pity they can't both lose."

Pro Assad Almyadeen TV channel tweets location of FSA fighters

Ghassan Bin Jeddo's new TV Network serving Assad regime but not just through lies and propaganda

The Lebanese Al-Mayadeen TV channel's official Twitter account posted a tweet today that appears to lead government security forces to the location of a Free Syrian Army fighter in Aleppo.
The official Twitter account of the channel deleted the aforementioned tweet and claimed that the account was hacked.

The Beirut-based TV channel is run by Ghassan Bin Jiddo, a Tunisian Journalist who left Al-Jazeera news channel following what he claimed to be "its lack of professionalism and objectivity in covering the Arab Spring," while arguing that “the regime of Bashar al-Assad is being subject to an international conspiracy."
Syrian activists claim that the channel has been cooperating with the regime since its launch after the Syrian uprising.

Some Rebels Worry About Extremists, but Assad Comes First

By Reese Erlich
TruthDig

"....At the same time, Ahrar and other opposition groups strongly oppose U.S. policy in the region. They want the return of Syria’s Golan Heights, seized by Israel in the 1967 War. They support Palestinian rights and oppose U.S. aggression in Iraq and Afghanistan.

None of those political views make Washington very happy. Opposition leaders assume that the U.S. is searching for pro-American leaders to take over once Assad falls.....

While the regime of President Bashar al-Assad accuses the rebels of being controlled by the U.S., the reality is more complicated. Syrians, even those seeking military aid, reject U.S. domination of their revolution....

Some secular Syrians don’t trust the Brotherhood’s rhetoric, however. Miral Biroredda, spokesman for the Local Coordinating Committees in Hasakah city, said the “Islamists say they want a democratic country, but I don’t believe them.”

However, both secularists and the Muslim Brotherhood agree on the danger posed by ultra-right Islamist fighters from Iraq and other countries now operating in Syria. One such group recently kidnapped two Western freelance journalists.

Such groups, Mushaweh said, “are very limited in number. They do things that don’t reflect the uprising.”

While ultra-rightists may gain temporary popularity because of their fighting skills, activists say, Syrians will reject such groups if Assad is overthrown.

“These foreign extremists won’t be allowed to stay in Syria,” Biroredda said. “When the regime falls and the civil movements rise again, these people will go back home.”....."

Egypt must uphold freedom of expression and halt prosecution of journalist

"The prosecution of an editor for publishing criticism of Egypt’s President and the Muslim Brotherhood should be halted and freedom of expression protected, Amnesty International said.

Al-Dostor editor Islam Afifi is set to stand trial on Thursday before the Giza Criminal Court in Cairo, reportedly on charges of publishing “false information” insulting to Egypt’s President Morsi.

Both the authorities and the Muslim Brotherhood must accept public criticism of their positions and actions without trying to hide behind Mubarak-era laws criminalizing the exercise of the right to freedom of expression,” said Hassiba Hadj Sahraoui, Amnesty International's Deputy Middle East and North Africa Director.

“Egypt should uphold its international obligations and ensure people are not subject to criminal prosecution for peaceful criticism, even if what they say is perceived to be offensive.”....."

Syria: Civilians bear the brunt as battle for Aleppo rages

"Civilians are enduring a horrific level of violence in the battle between Syrian government forces and opposition fighters for control of Aleppo - the country’s largest city and commercial capital - Amnesty International said in a new briefing on Syria.

The 11-page briefing, is based on first-hand field investigations by Amnesty International during the first half of August.

The briefing documents the Syrian government forces’ increasingly frequent air and artillery strikes against residential areas, resulting in often indiscriminate attacks which seriously endanger civilians.

The use of imprecise weapons, such as unguided bombs, artillery shells and mortars by government forces has dramatically increased the danger for civilians,” said Donatella Rovera, Amnesty International Senior Crisis Response Adviser, who recently returned from Aleppo.

During a 10-day visit to the city, Amnesty International investigated some 30 attacks in which scores of civilians not involved in hostilities, many of them children, were killed or injured in their homes, while queuing for bread and even in the places where those displaced by the conflict were sheltering as a result of indiscriminate attacks against residential neighbourhoods......"

A response to Joseph Massad's 'Hamas and the old/new American Crescent'

The US and its allies spent decades and billions to prevent the arrival of the Islamists to power, but have failed.

By Larbi Sadiki

".....
Arab masses

Massad somehow follows an elitist analytical itinerary. He overlooks the Arab masses: they authored the Arab Spring. His "story" ignores that the US, perhaps more hastily than the Europeans, rushed to salvage its foreign policy failure in the Arab Middle East. It often sided with dictators; excluded Islamists, only intermittently and sporadically, from its management of relations in the region; and as he notes correctly deserved the epithet "most formidable anti-democratic force".

The US and its allies spent decades and billions to prevent the arrival of the Islamists to power. They have failed. The Islamists are a fait accompli and it would be stupid for the Americans to keep on repeating the same mistake. They face a new learning curve; but so do the Islamists who cannot ignore the US. It is a case of many an elephant in the room.....

The Arab Spring (in quotation marks) is treated with a tinge of disdain - and the peoples who made it are excluded for the history Massad narrates in his article. Even the US has bowed to the Arab Spring. Enough of the kind of self-flagellation that in everything positive we find "conspiracy", as if the US is hijacking the Arab Spring, truly the most single emancipatory moment in modern history - in the case of Egypt and Tunisia entirely home-grown and driven by people's power and quest for dignity and freedom. It is one aspect of Arab history with which the International Misery Fund has nothing to do. It is not made in the US....."

"At the frontline in Aleppo city, the young fighters are mainly from the countryside of the province. It has not been easy to stand up against the Syrian army, especially when the city did not rise up when rebels stormed some poor neighbourhoods and set up bases. While the majority of the fighters in Aleppo are Syrians, the war has however attracted Arabs who feel obliged to help the opposition who are mainly Sunni Muslims. Bibi’s War

We don't have to fight it

by Justin Raimondo
, August 22, 2012

"Has there ever been a more brazen display of a foreign government dragging a more powerful nation into a war not of its own choosing? I’m talking about the almost comical efforts by the Israelis to goad Washington into attacking Iran: the government of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin “Bibi” Netanyahu has done everything and then some to put pressure on the Obama administration to act. The latest display of overt manipulation was recently featured on Israeli television:

Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ‘is determined to attack Iran before the US elections,’ Israel’s Channel 10 News claimed on Monday night, and Israel is now ‘closer than ever’ to a strike designed to thwart Iran’s nuclear drive… The report added that Netanyahu and Defense Minister Ehud Barak believe Obama would have no choice but to give backing for an Israeli attack before the US presidential elections in November.”

Imagine, for a moment, Another Obama, one who exists in an alternate universe where American Presidents don’t kowtow to the demands of pipsqueak nations with delusions of grandeur — especially those whose security and prosperity are entirely dependent on our generosity. This Obama would answer these blackmailers with an unequivocal statement that the Israelis are on their own if and when they attack: that the US will not lift a finger to help them — no, not even if Israel itself comes under attack, as it will....."

The "Arab Spring" is Finally in Lebanon: Death toll from Lebanon fighting climbs to 10

"(Reuters) - The death toll from fighting between Sunni Muslims and Alawites in Tripoli climbed to at least 10 overnight, medical sources said on Wednesday, in clashes that the city's residents described as some of the heaviest since Lebanon's civil war.

More than 100 people have been wounded in the fighting which erupted this week along a sectarian fault line between the Sunni district of Bab al-Tabbaneh and the Alawite area of Jebel Mohsen.

The sectarian tone of the fighting reflects the Syrian conflict that increasingly sets a mainly Sunni Muslim opposition against President Bashar al-Assad's Alawite minority.

After a lull, Tripoli was rocked by some two dozen explosions between 2 a.m. and 6 a.m., apparently caused by rocket-propelled grenades....."

Syria crisis: 'shelling in Damascus' - live updates

Rebels 'returning to Damascus'

A report from Reuters suggests that today's intensified clashes in Damascus are a result of rebels returning to the city.

Maaz al-Shami, a member of the Damascus Media Office, a group of young opposition activists monitoring the crackdown in the capital, said rebels who had left the city during a fierce army campaign last month had started to return.

"They went back to their homes, or disappeared in the green belt surrounding Damascus," Shami said.

"They are back now, and the regime is responding with daily shelling and helicopter bombardment. A war atmosphere in Damascus is setting in," he added.

Shelling reported in Damascus

Explosions have been heard all over Damascus this morning as a result of tank shelling and the artillery positioned on Mount Qasioun, the city's Revolution Leadership Council says. "Sounds of gunfire are also heard due to clashes that erupted in some areas."

The report adds:

• Shelling targeted Nahr Aisha and clashes have been spotted on Damascus-Amman international highway
• Sounds of the clashes and shelling are heard from Midan
• Three tank shells have fallen in Dummar (west)
• Reports of storming Mouadamiyeh (in the western suburbs of Damascus) and Kfar Sousseh by regime forces this morning
• Helicopters are hovering in the sky over Mezzeh and Kfar Sousa.
Helicopters are opening their cannon fire on Darayya, Kfar Sousa and Nahr Aisha
• Initial reports say that the area near Mezzeh military airport has been under shelling due to clashes that erupted there......"

Eating the democratic crumbs from the Arab ruler's table

Previous leaders have benefited from circulated tales of personalised democracy, but Egypt's Mohamed Morsi won't be so lucky

Amro Ali
guardian.co.uk, Wednesday 22 August 2012 05

"Saudi Arabia's revered King Faisal once remarked: "If anyone feels wrongly treated, he has only himself to blame for not telling me. What higher democracy can there be?"

This line of "reasoning" has permeated the thinking of Arab rulers in which somehow they are the personification of a popular mandate and that democratisation is misunderstood by the wider population.

Yet it's one thing when Arab rulers say it, it's another when the Arab public quotes and endorses it......

Last month, in a move unlike that of his predecessor, Mohamed Morsi opened the presidential palace doors to hear complaints by Egyptians. A great gesture no doubt that will let off some steam. But the Morsi-Mubarak contrast will eventually wear thin as people demand their human security. All 83 million of them.

There is a need to increase transparency by strengthening the separation of powers and institutions that will mutually reinforce each other, and by building civic groups that will provide the informal political education to society. Personalities, policies, procedures and the public go hand in hand.

No amount of storytelling will make up for the hard work of building a real democracy. In the satellite TV and social media era, it's going to be tougher for would-be leaders to get away with unwarranted legend-building. They are best to leave that to successive generations who will determine the practical legacy they left for their people, not what they said at the dinner table or over the phone."

Al-Jazeera Video: Scores killed as Aleppo violence continues

"Opposition fighters say they now control over two-thirds of Syria's largest city, Aleppo, but violence still rages in the country as 100 more people died on Tuesday. Aid agencies say that over 2.5 million people are in need of help in Syria. On Tuesday, Medecin Sans Frontiere officially announced they have been operating within Syria for the past year without the permission of the government of Bashar al-Assad, the Syrian president. Al Jazeera's Rula Amin reports from Beirut in neighbouring Lebanon. This package contains images that may disturb some viewers."

"The war in Syria is kickstarting old sectarian tensions across the border in Lebanon.

One powerful Shia clan has kidnapped more than 20 Syrians and a Turkish businessman.

The al-Meqdad say they will resume kidnappings soon if they do not secure the release of one of their clansmen being held in Damascus by the rebel Free Syrian Army.

Al Jazeera's James Bays met members of the clan and sent this exclusive report from Beirut."

Don't lose sight of why the US is out to get Julian Assange

Ecuador is pressing for a deal that offers justice to Assange's accusers – and essential protection for whistleblowers

Seumas Milne
guardian.co.uk, Tuesday 21 August 2012

"....To get a grip on what is actually going on, rewind to WikiLeaks' explosive release of secret US military reports and hundreds of thousands of diplomatic cables two years ago. They disgorged devastating evidence of US war crimes and collusion with death squads in Iraq on an industrial scale, the machinations and lies of America's wars and allies, its illegal US spying on UN officials – as well as a compendium of official corruption and deceit across the world.

WikiLeaks provided fuel for the Arab uprisings. It didn't just deliver information for citizens to hold governments everywhere to account, but crucially opened up the exercise of US global power to democratic scrutiny. Not surprisingly, the US government made clear it regarded WikiLeaks as a serious threat to its interests from the start, denouncing the release of confidential US cables as a "criminal act".....

But why, Assange's critics charge, would he be more likely to be extradited to the US from Sweden than from Britain, Washington's patsy, notorious for its one-sided extradition arrangements. There are specific risks in Sweden – for example, its fast-track "temporary surrender" extradition agreement it has with the US. But the real point is that Assange is in danger of extradition in both countries – which is why Ecuador was right to offer him protection.

The solution is obvious. It's the one that Ecuador is proposing – and that London and Stockholm are resisting. If the Swedish government pledged to block the extradition of Assange to the US for any WikiLeaks-related offence (which it has the power to do) – and Britain agreed not to sanction extradition to a third country once Swedish proceedings are over – then justice could be served. But with loyalty to the US on the line, Assange shouldn't expect to leave the embassy any time soon."

COMMENT

I am told by a very trust-worthy source, who is in a position to know, that this news item is incorrect. I was told that Farouq Shar'a is under house arrest in Syria and simply not allowed to leave the country.

Hamas and the old/new American crescent

The PA has "very little more to offer" to Israel and the US is the deciding factor in its "survivability or demise".

By Joseph Massad
Al-Jazeera

".....As Hamas is admitted into the US camp, the new "crescent" that is slated to dominate (part of) the region is not "Shiite" and anti-American at all, as US and Saudi propaganda and their allies have claimed for the last decade, but the very same old American crescent, headed by the old tyrannical regimes and the triumphant Muslim Brotherhood and its affiliates. That this is the American plan being executed for the region is clear enough, its success however is far from being certain."

Tariq Ali, Ex-U.K. Ambassador Craig Murray Praise Ecuador for Granting Asylum to Julian Assange

Democracy Now!

"Shortly before Julian Assange spoke on Sunday, a number of his supporters spoke outside the Ecuadorean embassy. Speakers included writer and activist Tariq Ali, as well as Craig Murray, the former British ambassador to Uzbekistan. Murray, a whistleblower himself, was removed from office in 2004 after he exposed how the United States and Britain supported torture by the Uzbek regime. "The fact that [British Foreign Secretary] William Hague now openly threatens the Ecuadoreans with the invasion of their sovereign premises is one further example of a total abandonment of the very concept of international law by the neoconservative juntas that are currently ruling the former Western democracies," Murray says....."

Iran in dire straits

Iran must deal with its own people before it can continue jockeying for geopolitical gain in the region.

By Hamid Dabashi
Al-Jazeera

"A widely circulated cartoon on the internet among Iranians these days depicts the official Iranian press almost entirely ignoring two successive earthquakes in Northwestern province of Azerbaijan while fixated on the events in Syria.

As the two earthquakes - magnitude 6.4 and 6.3 - hit the northwestern province of Azarbaijan in Iran that resulted in at least 306 people dead and 3,000 people injured, and while the ruling regime is widely condemned for its indifference and/or incompetence to address the matter effectively, there are renewed claims by the Obama administration that the Iranian revolutionary militia (Pasdaran) is aiding and abetting the defunct Assad regime in Syria to stay in power.....

The ruling regime in Iran, meanwhile, has every reason to abandon Iranian people to their own devices and worry about the Syrian regime. The magnitude of the earthquake coming its way, should the Syrian regime fall, is way beyond what has hit ordinary Iranians in Azerbaijan....."

The War in the Shadows

"There are now many thousands of clandestine operatives, nearly all of them armed and equipped with a license to kidnap, torture and kill, working overseas or domestically with little or no oversight and virtually no transparency........

The multitudes of crimes these killers, torturers, kidnappers, propagandists, special operations units and spies have carried out in our name are well known to those outside our gates. There are hundreds of millions of people who have a tragic intimacy with the twisted and brutal soul of American imperialism. Okinawans. Guatemalans. Cubans. Congolese. Brazilians. Argentines. Indonesians. Iranians. Palestinians. Panamanians. Vietnamese. Cambodians. Filipinos. South Koreans. Taiwanese. Nicaraguans. Salvadorans. Afghans. Iraqis. Yemenis. Somalis. They can all tell us who we are, if we can listen. But we do not. We are as ignorant, gullible and naive as children. We celebrate fictitious red-white-and-blue virtues while our clandestine armies, which at times achieve short-term objectives but always finally plunge us deeper into violence, have steadily weakened and discredited the nation as well as the purported values for which it stands. These clandestine armies travel the globe, awash in hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars, sowing dragon’s teeth that rise up later, like the warriors in the myth of the Golden Fleece, to become mirror images of our own monstrosities. To Laugh or Weep: The Crazy Assange Case

By Eric Margolis

"....Just about everyone knows that Washington is behind efforts to corral Assange and ship him to America for trial though his alleged misdeeds were all done outside the US.

We are seeing the relentless extension of US law abroad: under this new doctrine, those who commit acts deemed hostile to the US can be arrested or kidnapped overseas – even if they had never visited the United States.

Ecuador is defying a very angry Uncle Sam by sheltering Assange. A storm of Yankee fury will fall on this small Latin American leftist republic that is friendly to Venezuela, Cuba and, gasp, Iran.

Latin America may rally behind plucky Ecuador as traditional anti-Americanism and claims of Yankee bullying are aroused.

Ecuador’s populist president, Rafael Correa, is likely to emerge as a new Latin American hero. EU critics will lambaste Britain as a human rights violator and American toady.

Looking back over the whole Wikileaks business, it’s difficult to conclude that the US was seriously damaged or endangered by the emails released by edited Wikileaks. There was nothing life-threatening or earth-shaking in them. But the leaks were terribly embarrassing for Washington, revealing to the public its often muscular exercise of power, strong-arming other nations, and often dim opinions of so-called allies – nothing we professional journalists didn’t already know.

Assange was a crusading journalist who succeeded in exposing the dirty underwear of big government. His Wikileaks showed that the US-led war in Afghanistan was truly lost, contrary to Washington’s cheery spin – just a much as the famed "Pentagon Papers" of the 1970’s revealed and debunked official the lies about the Vietnam War. At the time, Daniel Ellsberg, the patriotic official who released the "Pentagon Papers," was also denounced as a traitor....."

Syrian tanks pound Damascus suburb, rebels fight back

"(Reuters) - Syrian tanks shelled the rebel-held Damascus suburb of al-Mouadamiya, on Monday killing at least three people and wounding 20, opposition activists in the area said.

"The offensive began at 6 a.m. (0300 GMT). Tanks were dispatched from al-Mezze airport base and Brigade 555 from Somarieh and have now almost surrounded Mouadamiya," Haya, one activist, said by telephone, referring to nearby military bases.

The rebels had repelled at least one attempt by a tank unit to enter the southwestern suburb, the activist said.

Video footage posted on YouTube showed no movement in the streets of the large township of low-rise buildings, with the silence broken only by the sound of shelling.

Syrian troops entered Mouadamiya at the end of July after a two-day offensive in which more than 120 people were killed, according to residents and opposition activists.

But then, as in other areas around Damascus, rebels began to regain control after the army pulled out for missions elsewhere......"

Julian Assange urges US to end 'war on whistleblowers'

WikiLeaks founder makes speech from balcony of Ecuadorean embassy thanking supporters and asking US to end 'witch-hunt'

guardian.co.uk, Sunday 19 August 2012

"The WikiLeaks founder, Julian Assange, has urged the United States to end its "war on whistleblowers" as he used a dramatic appearance on the balcony of the Ecuadorean embassy to thank supporters for backing his fight against extradition.

Assange thanked the nation of Ecuador for taking a "stand for justice" in giving him political asylum, while warning that the United States risked shunting the world into an era of journalistic oppression.

He appeared on the balcony of the South American country's embassy in London, where he has been taking refuge for two months as he seeks to avoid extradition to Sweden to face questioning on sexual assault allegations.

Assange thanked the leaders and people of Ecuador for supporting him and also staff at the London embassy "who have shown me hospitality and kindness, despite the threats we all received".

He thanked the governments and people of Argentina, Brazil and other Latin American countries who defended the right to asylum and people in the US, UK, Sweden and Australia who supported him in strength even when their governments did not.

"As WikiLeaks stands under threat, so does the freedom of expression and the health of all our societies. We must use this moment to articulate the choice that is before the government of the United States of America," he said......"

Class Struggle in Present Day Globalized Capitalism

By James Petras

"....
Conclusion: Globalization and Class Struggle

Globalization has not ended the class struggle as some pundits on the left and right argued. Rather globalization has changed the classes in conflict, the nature of the issues and the strategies of the antagonists. Above all ‘globalization’ is not the main determinant of the outcome or intensity of class struggle, nor is the level and result of class struggle frozen in time. Neoliberal regimes at the center of the globalization strategy were overthrown by heterogeneous coalitions of class and mass organizations in Argentina 2001, Bolivia 2003, 2005 and Ecuador (2000,2005). In other instances, highly indebted globalized economies in crises like Greece, Spain and Portugal have witnessed repeated general strikes and mass struggles.
Widespread class struggle is unfolding in dynamic industrializing countries such as China, where high levels of exploitation and inequalities and the absence of a ‘social net’ have provoked mass unrest.
On the other hand in globalized economies, center-left regimes, with dynamic growing extractive sectors have been able to limit class conflict to economic struggles among the mainstream trade unions and to isolate the militant class/social struggles of marginalized provincial communities, at least in the present conjuncture.
The intensity and scope of class struggle under conditions of globalized capital varies with the previous success of past class struggles and world commodity prices. Under extremist neo-liberal regimes, declining commodity prices and economic crises, class struggle intensifies. In conjunctures where center-left regimes successfully pursue full employment, wage increases and anti-poverty programs, and are favored by high commodity prices, the class struggle ebbs and is channeled into a collective bargaining framework.
As the current recession in Europe and the US deepens and spreads across the world economy, the Asian engine of world growth slows (China) or stagnates (India). As the depression in Southern Europe spreads north, Germany, France and England enter recession. The economic foundations sustaining capitalist hegemony weaken: global crises, declining commodity prices, radical austerity programs, augur an extension and intensification of the class struggle. The struggles of communities fighting extractive capital may spread to the cities; the decline of commodity prices will lower the margins for negotiated wage settlements among the urban working class.
Class polarization may sharpen as a zero-sum situation undermines the center-left formula of growth and reforms. Globalized crises may put closure on “export solutions”.A ‘new model’ derived from the outcome of heightened class conflict may emerge depending on who wins.A victorious ruling class will savage all social programs and increase exploitation and austerity; a victorious outcome by the ‘classes from below’ can augur a basic transformation of the crises-ridden capitalist system toward greater public ownership and planning under worker, ecologists, peasant and consumer councils."

Dismay at addition of Joshua Treviño to Guardian US commentary team

guardian.co.uk, Sunday 19 August 2012

"We are writing to express our shock and dismay at the addition to the Guardian's US commentary team of a man who has openly called for the killing of people on humanitarian missions to Palestine, people who have included the Pulitzer-prize-winning author Alice Walker.

The extreme views of your new freelance contributor Joshua Treviño, whose columns will appear on your Guardian US website from tomorrow, are no secret. In 2011, he used Twitter to urge the Israeli army to murder unarmed US citizens who were preparing to sail from Greece on a flotilla to Gaza. Treviño tweeted: "Dear IDF: If you end up shooting any Americans on the new Gaza flotilla – well, most Americans are cool with that. Including me." He also backed a tweet which called for the sinking of the flotilla, which would have endangered the lives of all on board, and likened this peaceful mission to a "Nazi convoy".

In what way does publishing a man who clearly has no regard for the rule of law, and who advocates the killing of his fellow citizens by a foreign army, enhance the Guardian's reputation as a serious newspaper? The extremist views of people like Treviño, who have no hesitation in wishing death upon those who disagree with them, can be found on countless sensationalist, racist and hate-speech websites. They have no place in a reputable publication.

Moreover, Treviño is hardly without vested interests. He served on the board of the pro-Israel group Act for Israel, and was listed on its website as being "a staunch digital advocate of Israel". This former speechwriter for George W Bush will no doubt be bringing his one-sided political views to the Guardian and using it as a platform for his propaganda. It is a sad day for responsible and impartial journalism when the opinions of such a man are sought as an "important perspective" (the words of Janine Gibson, editor-in-chief of the Guardian US) by a supposedly progressive publication.

UN leaves Syria to its bloody fate

Special report: As the international troops retreat, heavy arms will flood into what will become a free-fire zone

By Robert Fisk

"The UN's commander in Damascus bid a miserable goodbye to his mission yesterday, unconvincingly claiming that the UN would not abandon Syria, but in fact turning the country into a free-fire zone the moment his last 100 soldiers begin their retreat tomorrow. Whenever the UN withdraws its personnel from the Middle East, calamity always follows in its wake – the departure of UN weapons inspectors from Iraq in 2003 presaged the Anglo-American invasion – and, privately, the UN fears the way is now open for the West and Gulf Arabs to pour heavy weapons into Syria to assist the rebellion against the Assad regime......"

Al-Jazeera Video: Inside Syria: Can Lakhdar Brahimi end the Syrian conflict?

"Kofi Annan, the outgoing UN-Arab League special envoy to Syria has called his job "mission impossible". So what hope is there that his replacement, Lakhdar Brahimi, can succeed in bringing an end to the violence in Syria.

The UN admits both sides appear to be set on war, yet Brahimi, the Algerian diplomat believes every conflict has a solution.

Brahimi is taking over from Annan a day after the UN Security Council ordered its UN observers out of Syria. Members of the UN team based in Homs have been making their way to their headquarters in Damascus from where they will leave the country."
