PLC speaker: emergency government is a "dangerous coup"

"Gaza – Ma'an – Acting Palestinian Legislative Council (PLC) speaker Ahmad Bahar on Sunday described the Palestinian emergency government as a "coup" against the Palestinian law and constitution.

In a press conference held at the headquarters of the PLC in Gaza City, Bahar accused President Mahmoud Abbas of challenging the PLC and attempting to suspend it, along with the unity government. Bahar criticized Abbas's suspension of articles 65, 66 and 67 of the Palestinian law.

"The presidential decree announced by Abbas is the most dangerous violation of legislation in Palestine," said Bahar. He continued, "This violation could lead to the collapse of the whole legislative system in Palestine."

Bahar also said that the PLC cannot be dissolved during a state of emergency.

He said the refusal to negotiate with Hamas was "absurd" and "neglecting the fact that Hamas is an inseparable part of the Palestinian people."

Bahar issued a statement in response to declarations made by the speaker of the Fatah, Azzam Al Ahmad. He said "al Ahmad's claim that the Arab League and Arab foreign ministers have announced their antagonism to Hamas is creating a deep rift between Hamas and the Arab and Islamic world.""
