"GAZA, (PIC)-- MP Mushir Al-Masri, one of the Hamas political leaders in Gaza, on Sunday expressed surprise at PA chief Mahmoud Abbas's insistence on having talks with Israeli premier Ehud Olmert despite the escalating IOF aggression on the Palestinian people.

Masri, who is secretary of the Hamas-affiliated parliamentary bloc, said that Abbas was trying to strengthen his position with the Israeli backing in a bid to reject any dialogue with Hamas and to foil Egyptian president Hosni Muabrak's invitation for a Fatah-Hamas dialogue in Cairo. He further charged that the Abbas-Olmert get-together was meant to cover up for a fresh Israeli aggression on the Palestinian people.

The Hamas leader underlined that the "Zionist enemy" was the only one benefiting from such meetings, and expressed fears that the meeting would be exploited to impede national reconciliation in the Palestinian arena.

Meanwhile, well informed Palestinian sources in Ramallah disclosed in a statement to an Omani daily that Abbas had asked Olmert to pressure Egypt into closing the Rafah terminal. The sources told Al-Raya newspaper that opening the crossing had embarrassed the PA leadership, which had been asking for resuming control over the terminal."
