Syria jails 12 dissidents

"A Syrian court has sentenced 12 political dissidents to jail for political crimes after they had called for democratic reforms.

The 11 men and a woman were arrested after holding a meeting to revive a movement urging freedom of expression and a democratic constitution for Syria, which has been ruled by the Ba'ath party for four decades.

The 12 dissidents received between two and two and a half years in prison after being convicted on charges which included "weakening national morale".

Among the convicted was prominent activist Riad Seif, who has cancer......."
