Iran: Bans all music

Khamenei issued a fatwa (religious ruling) today in response to a 21-year-old who told him he was considering taking up music lessons, but would only do it if it were in line with Islamic values.

"Although music is halal [permitted under Islamic law], promoting and teaching it is not compatible with the highest values of the sacred regime of the Islamic Republic," Khamenei said, according to The Guardian.

"It's better that our dear youth spend their valuable time in learning science and essential and useful skills and fill their time with sport and healthy recreations instead of music."
