Emails obtained from private accounts believed to belong to Bashar al-Assad and his wife, Asma, appear to offer a remarkable glimpse of the lavish lifestyle the couple have continued to enjoy even as Syria's year-long uprising was being suppressed beyond the palace walls. They reveal Mrs Assad to be a keen internet shopper who spends thousands of dollars on luxury products ranging from jewellery to fondue sets while her husband swaps entertaining links on his iPad.
