Mahmud Darwish's Visit to Haifa

By As'ad Abu Khalil

"Mahmud Darwish was concerned about his image among Arabs regarding his visit to Israel. So he explained himself to that audience in an interview in Hebrew with Haaretz. What better way for an Arab democrat to explain himself/herself than an interview with the newspaper of the civilized man? In the interview, Darwish expressed his dedication to democracy. He forgot to add that he believes in the exemplary democracy that Dahlan gangs established over West Bank and Gaza in the 1990s. This explains why Darwish was silent then. (Well, Oslo regime gave him a nice house in Ramallah too.) Too bad I still think that he is the best Arabic writer there is."
