Occupied Jerusalem - Signals of a possible American intervention to topple the legitimate PA elected government were mounting, and were preceded by the ongoing security mess in the Palestinian territories that was carried out by security forces loyal to PA chief Mahmoud Abbas.
According to reports, the USA decided to intensively intervene with full force to derail the Palestinian democracy and topple the PA elected government in alliance with Abbas, and to strengthen his position through "innovative" means.
The Hebrew daily Ha'aretz newspaper quoted an Israeli diplomat as saying, "The US administration wants to boost Abbas' position and weaken Hamas through inventive means, including transferring money of the PA directly to Abbas' account".
According to the sources, Washington was worried that it couldn’t achieve any progress anymore in the peace settlement at this stage of time, and therefore, he added, it wants to bolster Abbas' position against the elected PA government.
Hundreds of PA security elements under Abbas' command were spurred by certain figures within Fatah faction to carry out violent incidents and vandalism in Gaza Strip under the pretext of unpaid salaries.
On Thursday, all PA employees, including PA security apparatuses received one-month salary from the cash-strapped PA government that strives hard to break the economic siege imposed on it by local, regional, and international enemies of the Palestinians people.
Meanwhile, Israeli premier Ehud Olmert plans to visit Washington within a month to meet with president George W. Bush and to participate in the annual meeting of Jewish-American community in Los Angeles.
Condoleezza Rice, the US-secretary of state, is expected in the region Wednesday to meet with Abbas and other Arab leaders loyal to America in the area to discuss with them ways and means to insure success of the American designs in the Palestinian arena.
Local observers anticipated that Rice will bring Olmert and Abbas together in face-to-face discussions during her visit.
They also linked Olmert's visit to Washington and Rice's visit to the region with Israeli plans to militarily invade the densely populated Gaza Strip as repeatedly uttered by Israeli officials, including IOF chief of staff Dan Halutz among others in the Hebrew media.
Israel, in this regard, was awaiting the American green light to go ahead with the full-scale blitz, and wants it to provide the IOF troops with the needed political and military cover in the same way it did during Israel's all-out war on Lebanon last July.
