BAGHDAD: Iraq has extended to Feb. 15 its invitation to international oil companies to submit registration documentation to participate in the country's second bidding round.

Oil Ministry spokesman Assem Jihad told The Associated Press on Tuesday that the extension was needed because of national holidays in January, including last weekend's provincial elections. The previous deadline was Jan. 31.

Iraq announced its second round of bidding to develop 11 oil and gas fields last year. The first round was announced in June. It opened eight oil and gas fields.

Iraq has at least 115 billion barrels in reserves. Officials say they want to add about 4.5 million barrels a day to the current 2.4 million barrels per day capacity over the next four to six years.
